An excerpt from the heart wrenching tale of a young Jewish girl and her family who, when the Nazi's invaded Holland, were forced to take refuge with a dairy herd:
"February 25th 1943 - It's so dreadfully cold in the fields today. Yesterday a group of drunk soldiers turned up and went cow-tipping. I never would have thought that a laugh, or a voice with a German accent could cause so much fear. Peter and his father got tipped; the cat (why does Peter keep the cat in his cow outfit? It can't be happy in there...) meowed when they fell. Maybe Peter's father fell on top of it. Luckily the Germans couldn't tell that it was just a disguise, and they must have dismissed the meow as drink induced hallucinations.
Mother has been complaining that I'm not cowlike enough when people walk by. Why can't I be as bovine as Margot she says. I can't help it; Margot is older than me, and she had a full year to practise dressing up as a farmyard animal. I was only 13 when we came to this field, and everyone knows that schools don't teach farmyard disguise until age 15. It could be worse I suppose; poor Papa has the most dreadful cramp with wearing his Goose disguise all day"
"February 27th 1943 - Jan is complaining again; he doesn't like being milked. I don't know why; Peter never complains about it. In fact he volunteers to go in Jan's place! He's so good and brave to take the risk on behalf of nasty old Jan. I'm getting milked again tomorrow. I don't really mind it, but I don't see why Mr Kraher the farmer has to milk me from behind. With his hands on my shoulders. I wonder if I should ask Papa why he does it like that?"
See, I saw the tittle, and thought it said diary anyway, then I thought, how funny would 'the dairy of...' be.
But it was that anyway, and it made me laugh.
:o)
