The new one-lap qualifying system has been described as “horrible” by F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone. He believes all the excitement has gone and suggests the FIA will wait a bit longer before changing it.
Ecclestone told the Brazilian new agency Agencia Estado, “They [the drivers] don't have the chance to try to beat a rival who has better their time. ”There's no fighting - the excitement of qualifying has gone."
There are two elements to the new rules, the one-lap shootout, instead of the previous three. And, that the car cannot be refuelled between qualifying and the race. Any alterations to this would fly in the face of FIA President Max Mosley.
He has suggested that any further reform would only be 'slight modification'. However, Bernie is typically unrepentant. "When you go to see the doctor and he gives you a pill and that doesn't heal you, he changes your medication.
"The new system is not working. We are going to wait a bit longer and then we are going to change it,” he continued.
While many fans would admit that much of the drama and tension has been lost in the new qualifying format, the races have both been of the highest quality. The teams are to meet following the Brazilian Grand Prix to discuss the changes. It would seem that more ‘research’ needs to be done. But, when Bernie speaks, everybody listens.

I only watched the Australian Qualifying, and I admit that it was boring. But then it gives a more muddled grid and a better race on the sunday, so should they change it and risk getting a more boring race?
I think that they should do away with qualifying.
The grid should be the reverse of the finishing positions of the previous Grand Prix. I.e whoever won in Australia would start last in Malaysia, etc.
Thoughts?
Sorry to seem dumb but I haven't paid any attention this year as last year was really boring. I knew they'd changed the rules about qualifying but just wondered on this.
Have one shot qaulifying on the friday, and qualifying how it used to be on the saturday.
Take the average of the best time on the saturday and the single shot on the friday. That way, more action for the viewers as garaunteed track action on the friday, exciting qualifying on the saturday, and chances of a muddled for the race on saturday.
I would like to see one shot qualifying on the Friday and the hour return on Saturday and have both count to the grid.
