Zavvi weren't part of Woolworths, but they did owe them a lot of money - which they couldn't repay.
Seems the reason is the usual - the suppliers are the same.
Entertainments UK (part of Woolies) supply Woolies and Zavvi.

Thats terrible news. The family I usually go to away football games is having a brilliant christmas this year - with the two children losing their jobs at Woolies, the husband being diagnosed with cancer and now the daughter's boyfriend may be facing a job loss (as he works for Zavvi).
Nicest family you could meet. Life really does mess up sometimes.

Notice that it's all the stores that sold entertainment goods at retail prices rather than cutting the prices?
They expect people to buy games at the RRP when they can go online and get them from 20-50% cheaper, with the odd sale item to justify it.
It's no surprise to me.
