Can anyone tell me why some website don't need the www. prefix and you just type http://
One case I type http://www. it can't bring me to that site.
Thanks for your advice.

I think the broswer just does it for you. When you upload you use ftp:// and then you have to enter your password and details in the correct syntax, but http:// can usually de deciphered.

Its because www is a domain name like .co.uk is. You don't need www as http:// is the sign that its a webpage and not www.

http:// is the protocal for your Browser to go get a Web Site ... as it is a standard, you don't need to type this now, as your browser will automaicly use this protocal if no other one is set.

phi11ip.com - for example, is the Domain Name.

www. can be the default server which part of teh site is on. For example you may see:

images.phi11ip.com
clips.phi11ip.com
www.phi11ip.com
audio.phi11ip.com

You can span your Domain Name to host on more than one Server if you have a large site, as it can make things easier to manage, as well as ensuring if one server goes down, the entire site isn't effected.

Generally though for Personal sites, you'll find www.whatever.com and whatever.com are the same thing.

eg: The address I always quote for my website is http://www.sine-wave.net/ as it looks balanced. However, http://sine-wave.net/ also works and is exactly the same thing. You could also try http://leaf.sine-wave.net/ , which is on a much faster server (but is currently experimental).

http://www.sine-wave.net/ and http://sine-wave.net/ are exactly the same website on exactly the same server, they just look good.

www. and leaf. are subdomains of sine-wave.net. www.somehost.com and somehost.com often point to the same website, but not always.

You are hosting your domain name on the Freeola servers. You have had your domain name on that account for quite some time.

Since the middle of last year we have added additional information to the server for all domain names hosted on the Freeola servers so that you don't even need the www at the front of your domain name.

Any domain name hosted befor this point does not have this. and will require the www. example, my domain name, "thebash.org" will work with any of the following:

www.thebash.org
thebash.org
http://www.thebash.org
http://thebash.org

All 4 versions typed into the address bar in a browser will work. If your domain name was hosted on your Freeola account befor this time, only the www.thebash.org and http://www.thebash.org versions of your domain name would work.

If you want all these varients to work, you can cancel the hosting in you Freeola Control pannel, wait 20 min's and rehost the domain name on the same account.

NOTE: YOU WILL NEED TO RECREATE ALL the e-mail addresses as well and they may end up with different POP accounts (the -001 etc) bit at the end of the POP account logon, SO DOWNLOAD YOUR E-MAIL BEFORE YOU CANCEL THE HOSTING. You will also need to update the settings in you outlook express to nog into the correct POP accounts.

If you do not know how to set this up in Outlook (or whatever you use) then read the section regarding e-mail at www.Freeola.info

You will not need to re upload you website so long as you put it back on the same account.
