NVDVD is the latest software from NVIDA, although NVIDIA make graphics cards, they also make software for said graphics cards. NVDVD promises to offer the best image quality, along with the lowest CPU utilization. Is NVDVD the best software to go with your GeForce, or are you better off with something such as PowerDVD?
>>> NVDVD Technology
The key feature to NVDVD over rival software players is that it integrates DVD playback as much as possible. This is possible because NVDVD is for only one graphics card, much like ATI DVD Player.
Usually to play DVDs you need three parts (software-wise):
An API
Drivers
Actual DVD software player (with built-in decoders)
NVIDIA are trying to integrate as much of each of those stages into their software (at the moment, only drivers). It should be noted that NVDVD should work with any GPU, not NVIDIA-only GPUs. Obviously, NVDVD is heavily optimised for NVIDIA GPUs.
NVIDIA seems to be quite focused on the laptop market. Probably because when you watch a DVD, you don't really do anything else - hence low CPU utilisation is barely going to affect you. But with laptops, every tiny bit of work your CPU has to do drains your battery a little bit more. If you could lower CPU utilisation and use the more efficient GPU at the same time - battery life should be extended. When on long flights, you will definitely want to have your entertainment last as long as possible.
NVDVD's primary advantage over other software is that it's developed by a manufacturer of graphics cards, so it can be heavily optimised for one line of graphics cards. This should result in some performance advantages over the competition -much akin to ATI DVD Player.
