Along with the music, those classic Christmas films are something you just can't escape from this time of year. So which ones would you hang your stockings up for and which would you award a lump of coal?

My personal favourites are below:

Muppet Christmas Carol
This is one I've watched every year and now watch with my kids. It's perfect without being too sickly sweet and full of classic Muppet moments. It's also the last film before it all went wrong (Treasure Island is a hit or miss affair).

The soundtrack too is worth mentioning, though it's a pity all the DVD releases so far have one of the best scenes (and songs) cut from them.

Santa Claus The Movie
Dudley Moore as an elf and lots of Christmas magic, it's a feel good film that really works. Better than anything else that came afterwards with the same type of formula (though Elf comes close).

Elf
One of the few modern entries in the Christmas film market that really worked. Elf has just the right type of humour and a good story to keep you coming back every year.

It's a Wonderful Life
All I can say is that they don't make 'em like they used to. Should be required viewing for all.

Gremlins
Ok, not strictly a Christmas film, but it certainly fits some of the criteria and it's just so good it had to be included.

I just hate being interuppted when i watch a movie. Especially when its anime. Happened 3 times now when i went to watch cowboy bebop and the GITs movies.

Flash, aaaah! I've got that on DVD just in case.

There's one more that I'm surprised Machie didn't come up with: Tokyo Godfathers. It's a great and slighty surreal anime about three homeless people: a girl, tramp and transvestite who find a little baby at christmas and try to find the parents.

I suppose theres flash gordon. Its always on the festive seasons often. You just can't have christmas without flash gordon.

Not my choice, but still, flash gordon.

Lethal Weapon and Die Hard were both originally Christmas movies. A glorified violent Christmas to all! And on that note, Jingle All The Way! An absolute gem. *Revolts*

Home Alone 1 & 2 are the absolute bomb, of course. Scrooged is also great.

I haven't seen The Santa Clause for an age tradgically. I remember that tickled me.

Good call Nin. Nightmare before Christmas is great and a film you can watch at Halloween and Christmas (like Gremlins I guess!)

Suppose Home Alone counts, yes. Not a big fan of it myself though.

Hah, someone at work mentioned Die Hard the other day as a Christmas film. It's a good film, yes, but it doesn't set the mood for me.

Now Scrooged, yes, that's good too, but it still comes below the others on my list.
