Sarah stood by a huge oak tree, beneath her lay a perfect carpet of natural green grass, fresh and full. Sarah followed a fly with her eyes. It landed to rest on a rock, situated in a stream that ran down, winding around trees and rocks till it came to an abrupt end as the water cascaded down the waterfall; into the steaming pool of water. Wild flowers; beautiful lilacs mixed with herbs and the most luxurious of vivid velvet red roses growing around it, Full of life.
An old man, supporting his weight between two sticks as his legs seemed no longer capable of coping took steps towards her. His eyes so warm and welcoming, his skin weathered and tanned like leather. You could follow the lines on his face like the trail of a snake. His hair, thick and full and his cheeks slightly rouged against his tanned roughed complexion.
He held out his hand and Sarah looked up at him. She smiled knowingly and clenched it tight as if it were her only possession. As if she would never let it go again.
They walked past the pool of water and began to make their way up a grassy hill. The old man, wise his face solemn.
Placing a stick forward first, using his strength to hoist his leg forward then the next. Sarah stop then take a few steps forward till she reach a black wire fencing.
She followed the line where the ground met the sky with her eyes from the left to the right. First, the sky blue, cloudy with a greenish haze. Below it a row of fields, coated with ash. Her eyes moved across; the remaining growth was being burnt in organised lines that stretched across leaving clouds of fog and smoke hothering above. Sarah took a deep breath. For at the edge of these fields lay a land that was difficult for the eyes to see. Metal, shiny silver beams and structures rise piercing into the sky. No gaps in-between or space. Every inch feeled with wires spindling and spiralling between and around chunks of metal artificial construction. Electrical impulses running through these wires, a entire bodywork. Like an impulse, racing down a muscle. No natural light here, no trees or birds. Just complete obscurity.
Sarah’s ears only just seemed to have recognised the ghastly manufactured sound of the wide metal object beside her. This strange thing blew air and was similar to an extractor fan only much more complicated. Sarah put her hands through the black wire fencing and pressed them against the cold transparent glass wall.
Alertness struck Sarah as the loud toneless noise drummed through her skull. “NUMBER 80293 remove your hands from the barriers and return to your habitat” Slow and droning. She felt two warm hands on her shoulders pulling her away. The old man scared for her well being.
She walked backwards slowly, only to look up “ZZZzzzz” She heard the fly, her little friend. She watched the little black being whiz above her so freely in the air. It flew through the metal fan and out through the other side only to crash to the ground immediately. A tear trickled down Sarah’s cheek. She look up as if to see the sky to find more horrible wires combined with the clinking of the un-natural world it had come to. She look around at the paradise she was living in, sat down on a rock and cried.
