England's Euro 2004 qualifier in Liechtenstein next Saturday is in doubt after police in the principality asked for the game to be postponed due to the war in Iraq.

Uefa are expected to make a decision on Monday after a visit by their security experts, and following talks involving Liechtenstein's football association, MPs and police.

There are fears that England could be a target for terrorists and anti-war protesters, and concerns that Swiss police may not be able to deliver the 1,100 officers they had promised as help if there are anti-war demonstrations in Switzerland next weekend.

Uefa director of communications Mike Lee told the Sunday Times: "Concerns were raised at the end of the week which we will now have to discuss with both national associations. It's too early to say whether or not this will affect the fixture. We will have further discussions on Monday."

Lee would not rule out switching the match to England, adding: "We have to look at all the options if there is a reason why the game cannot go ahead. Switching the fixture to another venue at this late stage could be difficult but a lot will depend on the dialogue that will now take place.

"Clearly the Liechtenstein FA wants the game to go ahead but they have expressed some fears following the start of the war in Iraq and we will now have to evaluate those."

The English FA are understood to be lobbying hard for the game to be played at the 3,548 capacity Rheinparkstadion.

But Fredi Hilti, vice president of the Liechtenstein FA, said: "I cannot say for definite that the game will go ahead until Monday. We have more meetings planned and we are still checking out the situation.

"Since the start of the war the security situation here has changed. We have the England national team coming to play here and England is involved in the war. Everyone is looking forward to this game, we have been preparing for months, but right now I cannot tell you that it will definitely go ahead."
