Hey all,

A quick question for you nothing mind blowing.

When my PS2 tries to read a disk it tends to screech loudly for a second or two and then proceeds to read the disk and it loads up fine but it concerns me, anyone else get this issue or is this leading to a problem with the lens?

Ta in advance.

With my amazing technical know-how I'd suggest you turn the machine upsidedown and then back again and see if that's shifted anything enough that the noise stops.

ie it could be something slightly out of alignment.

Can't say I've ever heard a PS2 make such a noise, but I'd be alarmed if it did!

I have a slimline PS2 now, but only because I fell in love with the design and it takes up less space. I still have my original launch model, and it's still going strong! :-)

Must be quite rare now - wonder what it would get on eBay? ;-) Not that I'd ever sell it.

Yep! Sorry I wasn't more helpful. I'm at a point where the work is starting to get difficult and will require some thought, but I'm becoming less and less able to do that at this time in the afternoon.

Back on topic though, I've never had a screeching, but I have had some very loud vibrations, almost like the disc is sawing its way through the machine. It happened mostly with blue discs. Eventually it wouldn't really load them at all and I converted to a PSTwo. Does it affect all your discs, dvds, cds, the lot, or specific kinds? Sometimes that can be a clue. Also, I used a disc cleaner for a while when I had lots of disc read errors. That prolonged the life of my PS2 by a year or two, but it doesn't sound like it'd be a cure for screeching.

I had this problem for a while, but it turned out that a bird had flown in through the grill at the back of the PS2. Everytime I fired up the PS2, there would be this loud screeching noise... which went quiet after a minute or two each time. I've undone the grill and pulled out the bird. It fluttered away unharmed and has since been spotted flying past the window, albeit with a slightly mysterious flight path.

If you've got a similar problem, I'd deal with it quick or your PS2 could be seriously clogged up with feathers and bird droppings. If you are unable to undo the back of the PS2 to remove the bird, I recommend placing food (seeds and water) inside the PS2, otherwise you'll have animal rights people all over you. From what I can tell, the best place to put seeds in is through the hard drive bay, but in the case of the new slimline PS2s its probably better to put the seeds directly in through the cd tray. When placing water in the PS2, remember not to use it for at least five minutes.

I hope that helps, its certainly helped me pass the time.
