I was reading an article in a law magazine (Lawyer 2B) on American tort laws and the 'blame culture' (exemplified by those cases you hear about that seem to defy common sense, eg, man flees police, gets frostbite, sues police for not catching him quick enough (see overlawyered.com) ).

Now, if you pay any attention to Michael Moore you'll be aware of the links between various oil companies and the Republican (Bush's) government (whatever you make of the links), and also his insistance that actually the Democrats won the 2000 election. Nobody claims them to be perfect of course, but this article indicates them to be closer to the Republicans in their 'imperfections' than I'd thought.

The article places a fair level of blame for the dubious legal environment with the old Democrat government, who have seen willing to watch the law develop unchecked, leading to increasingly disturbing outcomes of dubious cases. From these rulings, which typically seem to carry huge settlements, trial lawyers make big money, taking a significant cut - as much as a third - of money awarded by the court.
The link between the two? In the 1999-2000 election campaign, it is pointed out, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) was ranked the 6th most powerful lobby group, and 90% of its contributions went to the Democrats.

If the oil companies own the Republicans, the lawyers own the Democrats.

Of course, it'd be harder to allege a link between such contributions and a decleration of war (though which party is worst is of course a matter of political opinion).
I just find it pretty disturbing to see that in America you really can't vote for anyone safe in the knowledge they'll at least always *try* to act in the *peoples'* best interests without first looking to align their policies to keep their donations coming in.

To be President you need a number of millions of pounds

Leaving only two parties to stand, Republicans and Democrats

There is no elected government, little majority in voting, the last elections were fixed beyond believe etc

American funded a coup de aie (sp)in Chile in 70s... it was a democracy but they said they helped because he wasn't elected more than 50% majority or something

They're hypocritcal willieheads

American politics is a joke. The President becomes such by being the most photogenic and most proper family man in the running. Rarely are votes decided on matters of political policy.
