In the next couple of days I’m expecting to change. I’ll leave one day, go into a state of metamorphosis, possibly involving a cocoon or pupa, and when I return I’m going to be different.
Actually, no, I’m not, but in the next day or so I’ll have amassed three hundred posts, ten thousand words and twenty-one glorious days here, whilst I’ve been tarnished with a newbie brush. I won’t be a different person. I won’t really have changed at all, but I’ll post under a lovely new purple “Simon Says”.
The purpose of this post is two fold. One is to celebrate my coming of regulardom, and the fact that I will soon lose my newbicity. Hooray me ; )
The second is to ask if there is a certain newbism in the forum. There have been threads here suggesting the newbies shouldn’t be allowed to post here. This post met a lot of resistance, but since then there has been a number of pointless posts here. I don’t want to reopen that debate, but I am interested to know how seriously you take new people posts. If some new person (or a JAT) took the time to write a long post would you bother to read it? Would you bother to reply if you did? Would you pay it the same attention as some of the notable’s posts, or a noted regular who has a record of writing good posts (or even a newbie with a long history, i.e. Light)?
Personally from my recent experience I don’t think I’ve been the recipient of any actively anti newbie abuse, but I sometimes wonder whether some of my posts have been leant greater attention if I wasn’t a newbie, or if I was more established.
I think I have pretty much answered my own question. Clearly more established posters are more often read, in the same way as a popular author is. I agree with a number of people (I.B. and Grix spring to mind) that we should ignore the newbie spam posts, but we should also support and nurture the newbies who do make an effort with their posts, or offer thoughtful replies.

BAck to the topic - For me it boils down to how much time I have - as most of my time here is spent while I am at work it is very dependent on how busy things are in the office. If I have loads of time I will read through topic after topic and post where I feel I have a response worth adding. If I am short of time I will generally look at posts from people that I know as do most others.
The thing about a lot of posts from Newbies that appear here is that if they have made a complete rss of themselves when they first come on then they tend to lose your respect straight away and you will ignore there future postings alot of the time.

BAck to the topic - For me it boils down to how much time I have - as most of my time here is spent while I am at work it is very dependent on how busy things are in the office. If I have loads of time I will read through topic after topic and post where I feel I have a response worth adding. If I am short of time I will generally look at posts from people that I know as do most others.

You think I'm going to waste my time reading a post that long from a newbie?!?!
I think there isn't an anti-newbie vibe per se, but there is a clan atmosphere that is hard to penetrate. Not literally, but it does make those outside feel one step removed from everything. Espically the way if someone does say/do something stupid ten people will jump and chastice the moron, following the pack mentality.

Personally, if it's a long topic and from the first glance and a bit it interests me, then I'll read it. If it's a long topic and I don't think it will interest me, I usually don't read it. Sometimes I'll try to and get bored, other times I won't even bother at all.
It's all down to my interest in the end. If I'm interested in something I read it, it's nothing to do with status, it's to do with simular interests.

I really every post i can irrespective of whether newbies or JATs write it. If their posts are foolish and incur opprobrium, they then get shot down for them.
