Suddenly the ship groaned, Samus stopped dead in her tracks. The vessel seemed to teeter as if on the edge of a cliff…silence. The suited hunter did not move, save for the tiny twitches of her gun-arm as she moved her wavebeam along the corridor. A bead of sweat ran down the inside of her visor and after what seemed like ages she stirred into action again and began treading down the hallway once more.

It had been over two hours since Samus had boarded this starcruiser and she had not seen a single being, alive or otherwise. She knew there were creatures on board of course. Scanning the pipe-covered walls, rusty and buzzing with raw electricity, she could see the telltale signs of an invasion. There were Space-Pirates on board.

Suddenly from behind her came a hiss – she whipped around instantly, her wavebeam screaming with energy. She scanned the corridor heatedly and for an instant she could see a flicker of panic in her reflection on the inside of her visor. She noticed her gun-arm was shaking and she crouched against the wall, silent and alert. The longer you go without seeing anything, the more you expect it to be there.

As she lay in wait in the darkness, Samus Aran started to become more and more aware of a sound to her right. She opened her mouth slightly to open up her ear passages more, she turned on her scanner…the sound grew louder…the sound was coming through the wall on her right. It was the tiny clatter of insect legs. There were bugs on board the ship!

Samus gave a cry and flung her self away from the wall. She span round and blasted at the fusillade of pipes and circuitry with her wave beam and the wall exploded in an eruption of smoke and sparks. From through the wall, hundreds of thousands of bugs poured…they sensed Samus instantly and swarmed towards her. The bounty hunter leapt to her feet and ran.

Her heavy breathing was almost deafening inside that tiny helmet of hers and her armour whirred and clicked as she ran. Constantly from behind her was the patter of claws, the hiss of the bugs and the rattle of their fat bodies. Samus turned as she ran and fired some rounds off. The bugs at the front of the swarm exploded into a mass of green flesh and chunks of their hard exoskeleton clattered across the metal-grill floor. Her feet pounded along the deck and suddenly she sighted what she had wished for - a tiny hole high up in the wall. Her pacing increased as she drove towards it and she put some distance between her and her pursuers. The hole grew closer and closer…she jumped.

Hurtling through the air, Samus contracted into her ball form and shuttled toward the gap in the wall. As she soared towards it she noticed it was a lot smaller than she first anticipated…and what was worse, she was falling away from it! With the screeching of the bugs still behind her, she released a charge and propelled higher, further, she hit the wall, sparks spluttered off the edge of the opening and she ricocheted off down the tunnel. The noise of the bug swarm faded behind her and she gasped with breathless relief…the end of the tunnel was visible ahead of her and she prepared to drop out.
