Now I can’t really call myself a devoted fan as I’ve only been watching the shows since about 2001. But I can clearly see a decline in entertainment since I’ve first been watching it. This is only my opinion though and others will probably disagree. But let’s take a look at some of WWEs greatest moments:
Kurt Angle has always been the annoying, self obsessed person he is and that’s what makes him perfect to own the title. This allows many favourite wrestlers to challenge him and eventually you’re hoping someone takes it off him. Before the end of 2000 Kurt Angle had the title. He faced many wrestlers in some glorious matches but one stood out from all the others. Armageddon Hell in a cell.
Now this consisted of 6 men fighting for the title. Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Undertaker, Rikishi, The Rock and HHH. The match was long but exciting throughout. Finishing moves galore and the oddest of victories made this one intense match.
Royal Rumbles have always been my favourite and every year and with the 2001 just round the corner I had to keep my eye on story lines leading up to the event. Although there were hardly any the moment came when 30 men battled it out in the ring for the chance to face Kurt Angle for the belt. This was fast paced and very absorbing. Kane was great, fighting for a full hour and also eliminating the Rock which was a huge turn up. Stone Cold claimed victory though as he eliminated Kane and made the whole arena explode with applause.
Moving on to mid 2001 Shane made an appearance in some unexpected matches. One that I will certainly remember is the Last Man Standing match against the Big Show. The match itself was great up to the point where Shane got completely beaten but picked up towards the end where Shane jumped off of a piece of framework around about 50 feet in the air and landed on the Big Show who was lying on a wooden stage.
Something odd happened towards the 3rd quarter off 2001. Shane purchased WCW and took over WWE with his range of wrestlers including Booker T and Rob Van Dam. This was a surprise to everyone and led to one of the longest and complicated story lines I’ve ever seen. At Survivor Series 2001 a match that would decide the fate of both companies took place. A tag team match, consisting of 5 men on each team. Kane, Undertaker, Big Show, The Rock and Jericho .vs. Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Shane, Booker T and RVD.
This was a surprisingly long match and lacked the quality of previous classics. The order of elimination was expected with Steve Austin and the Rock battling it out as the final two. Once The Rock pinned Stone Cold the whole arena blow up with applause and finally the long story line consisting WCW came to an end.
Little did we know though was that this was just the beginning. Next evening on RAW wrestlers were retuning begging for a job and the Rick Flare returned leading us to one of the most stupid mistakes in WWE ever.
The Royal Rumble appeared and was no classic as the person who won was HHH who guess what, made his return only a week ago. Many could see this coming making this a pointless boring match.
The biggest mistake ever was splitting the wrestlers to go on only one show. RAW or Smackdown. Not only did this allow you to only see your favourite wrestlers once a week, but things got awfully complicated from there. You would often have two story lines or even more going on at once, and they were never usually any good. You never knew who had the belt and what was going on.
So there you have it. This is my opinion bare in mind and many other fans will disagree with what I say. Wrestling has gotten worse from the two odd years I’ve watched it. Stupid story lines and boring matches prove just how desperate WWE have gotten. What do you guys think then?

I don't think the current members of the roster who came from WCW or ECW are the problem. It's all the marginally talented but boring former developmental 'talents' being pushed ahead of their more deserving peers. Would anyone here really rather watch Rodney Mack give an interview than Raven?
I agree as everyone else has, after the buyout of WCW and the initial debuts of WCW/ECW wrestlers the WWE seemed to get more and more boring. The WWE as too many wrestlers, in my opinion someone should grow some balls and be rid of a few of them or Vince should make this super business plan I've just this second thought up while typing this.
Vince should start his own competition, seriously, obviously not make it public that he runs it or in fact let anyone but trusted workers know. It would be similar to the roster split we have now only it would be two different shows under two different names just like the old WCW V WWF.
The Royal Rumble is no longer as big a spectacle as it once was because the winner is usually really obvious. Take this year for example. Brock was going to win the Rumble as soon as he lost the title to the Big Show.
The lack of competition has hurt the storylines a lot and that affects the wrestling. The roster split is pure death and injuries have hit the rosters hard and the lack of decent wrestlers to fight against has hurt because they are split on different shows.
They need to get back to basics. Outrageous storylines weren't used when the WWE was popular so why use them now? HHH needs to focus on wrestling instead of screwing Steph McMahon and protecting his position. All the decent matches are about 10 minutes so having people win in 2 minutes isn't going to win the crowds over. Focus on the wrestling and spend less time talking about nothing.
To sum up, focus on the wrestling, less backstage promos and boring promos, scrap the roster split, go back to basic storylines and just try to win the fans back like they did all those years ago.
And from the end of 2001-on, really, WWE has just been getting worse and worse. Admittedly, there have been some points where business has picked up - Benoit, Angle, Eddie Guerrero and Rhyno are all great athletes and they have all put on some amazing performances in their time in the WWF/WWE, but they don't make up for the all the ground WWE has lost on silly storylines such as the WCW/ECW/Alliance storyline, and this recent roster split, although I'm getting used to it now, hasn't really done much at all.
And then there have been all these new wrestlers getting introduced to the company. In the past year, we've had Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, Nathan Jones and quite a few others added to our favourite shows, and although most of them have a lot of talent, they really don't make up for some of the old faves that were fired at their expense; D'Lo Brown, Raven and Scott Hall.
Still, as long as wrestlers such as Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and The Rock (although we may not been seeing him around for much longer) are on the top of their form and are putting on outstanding performances, I'll be happy to watch WWE.
Good post.
I used to watch the WWF when I was a youngster, till about 1993, when for whatever reason I sort of just forgot about it. I didn't have Sky at the time so I couldn't watch it ... probably had something to do with it :)
I then started watching it again in 2000, when Channel 4 first aired Heat, and the Royal Rumble, and since then I'd have each PPV taped for me somehow, from anyone I could with Sky Sports. I soon had Sky put in, purely for the Wrestling on TV.
2000 was excellent in my view. It was the new generation of Wrestling, with a few of the oldies still about, and that's what caught my attention. The newness and the storylines they had, it was just entertaining to me at the time.
2001 came along, and things were just as entertaining, the storylines were fresh, the stars building up their name in 2000 were allowed to shine in 2001, things were mixing up and interesting. Once the invasion came into play, things were just as good as the previous year.
Unfortunately, after the Survivor Series, things seem to slow down. Titles were getting bought together, and wrestlers were getting held back in place for newer ones from the other company to get a look in.
2002, I still watched it, but I didn't really enjoy it as much. I continued to watch, because I thought it was just a slow few weeks, and that the entertainment would soon get back to normal.
Once the McMahon’s stopped appearing on TV, and the split came, I just had a sense that the TV I was used to and enjoyed had gone, and things were changing, and not for the better.
Now, I find myself not sitting in front of the TV to watch it on a Friday, or watching the tape on a Sunday morning, but instead either not watching it at all, or just hearing what happened from a friend. I even didn't bother watching No Way Out until a week later on Tape, because I just couldn't be bothered.
Now, I see WrestlMania being on at 2am, I'm not going to bother watching it Live, like I used to ... and that shows that the Entertainment, for me, has gone.
It's a shame, but I can't really call myself a fan anymore, even though I still watch it on/off. I've changed to more of a casual fan, which is something I never thought would happen.
Hopefully, the entertainment will come back ... but for now, its just another TV show.
But now for some reason, it just doesn't seem as special, with the odd exception. Y2J and Brock Lesnar are huge stars now, and with Rock on top form at the mo maybe we'll see some better TV. I think some midcard titles need to be brought back, the IC and Hardcore especially.
Well written.
