With all the news at the moment focusing on the impending war against Iraq, has anyone actually noticed that the Fire service is going to go on strike....again!

After turning down and 11% payrise last year, and turning down a 16% payrise only a week or two ago should they be offered a payrise at all after displaying that they are unwilling to have the service modernised and still want a pay increase to around the £30k mark.

I say that they should stop being so selfish - they are some of the highest paid public service workers. Firemen should be grateful for what they're earning as I'm sure many nurses that help save peoples lives EVERY day (not just when they get a phone call for a cat stuck up a tree)would like to be earning what they're currently earning!

The thing I don't understand about the fire strike is this. Where does the fire service think the extra money is coming from? When I first heard that they wanted 40% I thought they're asking for such a high amount to achieve closure with a lower, more realistic amount. Now that seems not to be the case. Where did they think the money was going to come from. The government ask for changes to try and run the fire service more smoothly, but that means job losses. Now if the talks and the request of forty percent ends with redundancies then the union are going to come out with some serious egg on their faces. At that point they seemed to back track a bit, and focus on not losing jobs rather than getting their forty percent. I agree that the fire service may have a case for not having any pay rise in the last god knows how long, but to expect the government to produce it all at the drop of a hat it ludicrous. Surely they shouldn't have allowed themselves to get to such an extreme situation in the first place.

That's the way that I see it, anyhow.

The majority of Firefighters are earning something like £22k for part time work.

They;re right to refuse the pay-rises. So long as they continue to refuse to take them for another 20 years and stop bloody striking.

the 16% offered was over 3 years, and was an average pay rise and not guaranteed to all workers and in return for this they were expected to sign up to unstipulated conditions, i.e. becoming casual workers doing 3 or 4 hours at a time. nobody but nobody in their right mind would agree to the conditions of modernisation when they are not clear as to what they are. the offer was to become more clear at a later date. would you sign up to this? not knowing what your signing up to? it is clear that there would be job cuts and therefore a risk to public saftey so tell me who is being greedy? its not about pay anymore its about your saftey.
