One of these games, and one that I haven't played for ages, is Guardian Heroes. It's a 2D cartoon adventure with a great manga style storyline and a lovely intro. In easy mode you can complete it in an hour or two, but on hard mode it's a lot longer. However, it's not the length of time that it takes to complete that's important, it's the fun, frenzied gameplay that you and three other people can have with some weird characters.
The best scene is the classic graveyard bit, where hordes of skeletons burst out of the ground with mud flying everywhere, you then have to battle through guards and a wizard before getting the famous sword which will help in your quest. The whole game pits you against a relentless horde of enemies, with loads of characters on screen at one time.
As a bonus, you get to play a simple beat-em-up using characters you have met or beaten in your travels. You don't just get to choose one on one either, you can have loads of fighters on each side if you wish. This can also be set up so that the computer controls everything and you can take bets on which side will win!
