A HORROR-style chewing gum ad showing a snarling dog crawling from a man’s mouth could be banned — after record complaints.
Wrigley’s commercial for XCite — with the slogan "Avoid Dog Breath" — sparked more than 430 calls in a week.
Watchdogs at the Independent Television Commission, said: "A lot were from parents whose children were terrified by it.
"We take that very seriously. But adults also say they find it distasteful because of the realism."
The ITC may now rule it can only be shown after the 9pm watershed — or ban it completely.
The pressure group Families Involved in Raising Media Awareness said: "Its special effects are terrifyingly realistic - it’s more a horror film than an advert."
Wrigleys chiefs were "dismayed" by the reaction.
A spokesman said: "It is not our intention to upset anyone. It is almost impossible to create a powerful ad everyone enjoys."

Horror-style? More a horror film than an advert? Scared kids? Distasteful? To be shown after 9pm or banned completely? And all because 'more than 430' people complained? What a load of balls!
Millions of people have seen this advert, and 430 complaints can have it banned? A group that aren't even large enough in number to qualify as a minority? They were just as stupid over the Xbox 'Cradle to Grave' advert.
Over half the population disagree with a war on Iraq, but no matter what they do, they can't change anything. But a few hundred pathetic individuals can complain about a TV advert with no sex, violence or bad language in it, and people bend over backwards to appease them!
For the sake of the human race, don't comply with their wishes - laugh these people off the face of the planet!
Dog Breath? Never come across that expression before anyway.
Let it wash over your head and smile serenely because you know these bottom-feeders will eventually get their head jammed in a dustbin or step in front of a bus because they were too busy reading Heat magazine.
Let it go....let it slide....
Hell, what do you expect from television?
"Had this car been travelling at 30mph, it would have stopped here"
or
"Mrs jones knew who her killer was..."
Both of these adverts are far more realistic, the first one showing a child being killed, and the second one showing a teenager kill his mother.
But, if people want to complain about adverts, let them. You can chuckle at least at the thought of their one-liners as they put the phone down after recieving one.
They should just get a life
cue gruesome deaths
What kind of sad, conservative, Daily Mail reading weirdo would phone in to complain about an advert, or indeed, ANYTHING they see on television? Oh, wait, I just answered my own question...
Other countries seem to have the balance done a lot better, and they have porn on TV late at night. Not that I'd watch it. Ahem.
what we need is another world war .....
