Well after taking the recommendations posted in the previous thread (which I couldn't be bothered to find), I've got hold of these two books and have so far read 3/4 of: I am legend. It is simply awesome writing, extremely compelling and quite chilling too. It has got my mind whirring like an Apache Gun ship caught in a Tornado. The sad thing is that I started it last night and will doubtless finish it on the way back to Dorking. Tis a shortish book, though as it deals with the angst of a sole survivor, you couldn't really expect a 700 page Steven King-esque behemoth. King openly admits that he is influenced by this book and by Mauthser (I think that's how you spell it?)

Incidentally I can sympathise with Neville, I'm all alone in the flat, surrounded by the living dead and it is only safe to venture onto the streets when the Dorking massive (8-13 year olds) are tucked up in bed. They are in effect retro-vampires, darkness being my only ally.

Looking forward to the Descent...

You'll be in rapture too, I'm sure. I can't wait for some people to read it so I can discuss some of the ideas (in another thread). Read on!

Just ordered The Descent.

I'm half way through I Am Legend, and the next few books on my list are "on loan"...

BTW twas I who recommended it. the first 3 chapters had me sh*tting myself. There are a hell of a lot of characters in the book, and each one has a gruesome tale to tell.

I think I will buy another of Jeff Longs books in the future

yeah, the descent is a far larger book, and will take you quite a while to read.

the best thing about I am legend I think is the atmosphere, the pure loneliness of it.

Finished I am legend the other night, the ending brought a lump to my throat. Great book and I didn't realise it was a SF until I read the back cover and the inside postscript (I always try to avoid any spoilers before reading a novel). The author was indeed inspired and the themes, style and ideas that pervade throughout the book are tres modern indeed. I am in complete agreement with Goatboy's précis, a cool recommendation.

The "fairytale is in fact reality" scenario is something that also is explored in The Descent, which I am devouring at an alarming rate on the train each day. I can't remember who recommended this one but thanks!

Ahem- Richard Matheson. The book was in my bag right next to my desk and still I decided to guess at the author's name.

He deserved more respect than that.
