`We are nothing in our attack without Ruud van Nistelrooy!`
Sure, we had "super-sub" Ole "4-goals-against-'Forest" Solskjaer starting there last-night, alongside Diego "Aha!-So-that's-how-you-score-a-goal!!" Forlan, but in comparison with the ever-record-breaking "Van the Man", neither one of these internationally recognised faces comes anywhere close to the Dutchman, in terms of pressence and physical strength, aswell as even goal-scoring - all 3 of which are crucial elements that any team NEEDS in there attack to score-goals.
And just look at what happened... Not only did we seem to give-away and lose possesion every-30-seconds, but we would've surely gone the whole 90-minutes without finding the back-of-the-net, if it wasn't for Gary "4-goals-in-11-years" Neville - via a lucky deflection - to keep our unbeaten run going strong(ish).
Sure, we may already have our place secured in the Quarter-Final draw, so perhaps the 2 remaining matches in our group don't really mean all-that-much to us, like they do Arsenal, or Newcastle United, but surely not-even-one of the 65,000-or-so supporters at Old Trafford last-night had payed up to a reported £70 in tickets, just to see an average 'United side under-perform in one of Europe's greatest stages.
If you cannot score goals, then how can you expect to win a match??
Sure, you may be able to keep clean-sheets with a rock-solid defence (and our's does seem to be shaping-up nicely now), but drawing ever game, only earning one-point-a-go, isn't really gonna get you anywhere near where you'd want to be!
I've seen this happen time-and-time again this season with 'United, and it even happened on a few occasions last-year, too, after the Christmas period when Andy Cole was needlessly flogged-off to Blackburn for £8m. Whenever Ruud van Nistelrooy is out of the team, we're always looking for another player with that same kind of 'pressence' that'll turn chances into goals, and really make defenders work for their sides -- a player we do not appear to have, anymore.
It's fine having an impressive line-up in midfield of world-class talents like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, and even Juan Veron, but what good are they without the right men (or even MAN) ahead of them to 'finish-the-job-off'??
It seems that every time something goes wrong in a game with Man United, the blame instantly goes towards Sir Alex Ferguson and his persistence in using that dreaded `4-4-1-1` formation -- and I believe this is rightly so! We're never gonna get anywhere ahead or Arsenal, domestically, if we're leaving Ruud van Nistelrooy upfront alone, with only Paul Scholes behind him in support - no matter how well these 2 have performed this season; both individually, and even as as semi-partnership.
You just have to look back to the days of Yorke and Cole, or Cantona and Hughes, to see that having 2 in your attack is the best way to go about it. And even the Shearer and Sherigham partnership for England (although we may not've gotten to see it quite enough), they fired us, together, through all-sorts-of-problems, and onwards towards the Germans in Euro '96.
When will Sir Alex finally realise that he's still in his job to do what he' been doing so well for the past 15-years, and that he isn't just there to warm the seat untill a real new-face comes along?!? He has to pull his finger out. And it has to be this coming Summer...
It's obvious he must still have some kind of plans to bring in one-new-face to the attacking line-up. Otherwise, why else would he have left Andy Cole's old No.9 shirt vacant for such a long period of time...? It's not like this shirt has been 'retired' to the great "Goal King Cole" or anything.
But we don't need another 'van Nistelrooy' just because the No.9 shirt is still vacant, or even because Paul Scholes needs to get back into midfield to find his 'prime', again... We need a new 'Ruud van Nistelrooy' to act as cover for the old one, when he's out injured, or away on international duty, or something.
If we don't have that kind of goal-scoring pressence that only the Dutchman has at Old Trafford these days, then we may never see another new trophy added to the Old Trafford trophy-cabinet (which must already be bursting at the seams!). Not for a long while, anyway. We simply cannot rely on Diego Forlan or even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to do the van Nistelrooy's job while he's away. They are not players that anyone could seriously call 'proper goal-scorers', even if young Diego has "made the scousers cry", while Solskjaer comes on makes up "happy, when skies are grey".
During the last few months, since our form started to slip (and not for the first-time this season) I've read a number of reports linking us with a number of European strikers including Barcelona's Dutch international `star` Patrick Kluivert, and even Auxerre's highly-rated top-scorer Djibrill Cissé, who has previously already signalled his intentions and desire to play in the Premiership, back in January.
And anyone of those 2 would be 'ideal' - no matter how much they'd cost ! (If you can spend £30m on a defender who takes three-quarters of the season to 'settle', and £28m on a midfielder we've never really 'needed', then how could anyone say 'no', here?!?)
Not only do both these players know how to score goals, but already, at such young ages, they've scored goals against some of the best in Europe - and at international level, too. Not only that, but they strike fear into the hearts of the opposing defence, as soon as the team line-ups are announced - just like van Nistelrooy!
And even if either of these 2 did become 'out-of-our-reach', Fergie would only have to look around a little harder for some other young and up-coming strikers, like Cissé, who could one-day-soon make a big impact. And infact... he's already done that by looking at Sunderland's David Bellion - dubbed "the next Thierry Henry"...
So what on Earth could be stopping him from making at least one right descision this coming Summer, with at least one of these names??? It certainly ain't money! Manchester United will forever be a club that "keeps getting richer" - and that is something that has only recently come straight from the mouth of Peter Kenyon, himself!
It's not about buying a new world-class striker just to fill-in the empty squad numbers here-and-there. We do seriously need another `out-and-out striker` who can seriously score-goals on a regular basis.
What if van Nistelrooy suddenly breaks-down against 'Villa on Saturday with an injury that casts him out for the rest of the season.... You can bet we *DEFINITLEY* won't picking up a single pice of silverware, no matter what kind of system Ferguson tries-out next! And that's the bit that scares me, as a United fan, most; a player who has preiously suffered a career-threatening knee-ligament injury is the one key-member of our team who can actually get us where we want to be! And without him, we're nowhere.
It's strange that... I always thought Roy Keane had the biggest on-pitch influence on our team, untill today!!
Wildcards mein arsch. The Swiss have produced several decent teams.
*fap fap fap fap fapfapfapfapfapfap*
Incidentally, I saw the highlights of the Real game last night - Raul is a brilliant player.

I don't know, Arsenal have drawn four of their 5 second round CL games, and they're *somehow* practically guaranteed a place in the quarter finals...
