INTERNET search giant Google is in talks to buy top online video site YouTube, it was claimed last night.

The Wall Street Journal said talks were at a sensitive stage. It estimated the site could fetch up to 850million.

YouTube was founded in February last year by three former employees of PayPal the electronic payment arm of online auctioneer eBay.

But its formula allowing subscribers to access homemade video clips on the web already attracts 32million users worldwide each month.

That is expected to rocket as more people gain access to high-speed internet and mobile phones armed with video facilities.

Google is thought to be interested in YouTube because the rival service attracts more people to its video search service.

Industry analysts say it has a 47 per cent share of the video search market, compared with Googles 11 per cent.

MySpace, which is owned by The Suns parent company News Corporation, has an estimated 22 per cent market share.

YouTubes chief executive, Chad Hurley, said earlier this year that the company could float on the US stock market.

Can't say I'm suprised, I didn't use it a lot but I never used it for searching things, on Google Video that is. And when I discovered YouTube over half a year ago I was hooked straight away. And I think I've watched over 2000 videos (almost 1500 probably shouldnt be there for legal reasons).

I don't mind if Google buy it, rather them than Yahoo or MSN I suppose.

This is getting annoying, not sure if it's happened to anyone else yet but I've seen several videos on YouTube and had ads with sound on. So it messes up what I'm trying to watch. Havent seen one ad that that asked me to turn on sound or has a turn off sound button. Grr.

I think my most hated advert (hasnt been on YouTube) is that damn mosquito advert with all the buzzing sound.

I was thinking the same thing.

Not that I can really watch stuff from Youtube at home, it's too choppy on my PC.

indeed that's what worries me too, especially as Google want to make money from people watching/downloading videos.

YouTube is great; however I don't think a takeover would be so good for it, as it would lead to more focus on copyright issues and some videos... as much as I support the law, I do like to be able to see a wide variety of music videos 24/7!
