"Strike Entertainment has set commercials wizard Zack Snyder to direct the remake of George Romero's horror classic Dawn of the Dead, digging up a June start date for the zombie redo, says Variety. The film is Strike's first go project since it struck a four-year production and co-financing deal at Universal, who will distribute the film in North America and most of the world.
James Gunn (Scooby-Doo) has scripted a reinvention of a 1979 film that cost $640,000 and became a highly profitable cult favorite. The film revolved around a swarm of slow-moving cannibalistic corpses who snack on the inhabitants of a shopping mall.
The contemporized version aims to place a greater emphasis on action and a young cast than the original, adds the trade. The film was Romero's sequel to the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead."
Is nothing sacred? As fans of the old film would agree, Dawn of the Dead doesn't really need a remake, OK, if it were good that wouldn't be too bad, but the scriptwriter wrote Scooby Doo for Christs sake.
Note how it says "young cast", which basically means a group of good looking teens who can't act but look good, and "a greater emphasis on action", meaning there's no story or hidden meanings about commercialism, just mindless action sequences.

They could at least have the decency to get Tom Savini in to do the makeup and gore effects.
This kinda crap has gotta stop, just because America has run out of new ideas for Horror films doesn't mean they should go round remaking all the classics.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is another victim of the sudden 'remake' trend going round Hollywood.
Modern effects could work well though. I loved the original, I liked the sense of isolation, they'd better re-create that, or I shall be angry...
Disgusting.
