Walkthrough for Website X5

If you're new to Website design then this software can help you to build a fairly competent website. Bare in mind that nothing compares to learning to code properly and this should really be seen as a way to build a site before learning proper web design.

Creating a simple website with Website X5 is very quick and easy. The software allows you to choose options, templates and graphics in a step by step process. (screen shots coming soon).

1. Add Website name and settings
On the Project Selection page, choose Create New Project to start building.

After clicking ‘next’ you will need to add details about your website:
Website Title: This is the title that will appear at the top of your site
Author: Add your name
Email: This will be used for contact details should you want to add them later.
Website Description and Keywords: These will be used for search engines to find your site easier
Footer Note You can use this for the date or the author information
Website Icon A small picture that will appear the top of your site

Choose the menu type. Vertical Menus show buttons down the side and Horizontal Menus show buttons along the top. You can change these later.

Choose a Template. Website X5 has over 1000 templates, though many of these are similar. You can choose one you like the look of or design one yourself by choosing ‘Custom Template’

Next you can change the Upper Banner. Adding an image and Title will display it in the top left of your site, though this can be tweaked later on. Background colour and shade can also be chosen. Choose Transparency to ignore any background on the image.

Note that at any time during the following creation process the site can be tested before continuing.

2. Map Creation
Clicking on Home Page will set the current page as the page everyone sees when they first arrive at your website. You can also add folders to keep other pages in a neat order and create levels. The software will then automatically link any new pages to your project and will add buttons on your home page.

3. Page Creation
The page creation screen is the main area for creating the look and content of your webpage.
The default area is four squares (panes) which can each contain a separate item, text, pictures, slideshows, Html code, links, basket area, video and audio items. To add one of these, just drag it from the right hand side on to one of the panes. The item can be edited by double clicking on it. The Writing icon, for instance, will open up an area for you to add text and will let you format this with fonts, colours and effects. All graphics and video items will be automatically saved to upload to your website when you finish.

Pictures can be edited, cropped, have effects added and borders. Videos, audio and slideshows can have their buttons edited to match the look of your website and there are options for displaying the content in the right format, as well as for converting the content (the smallest format is chosen by default, so pictures, for instance, will be added in png format).

If you wish to add more columns or rows then the icons at the top of this section will let you add them either in the middle of the current ones or at the end. Note that there is no way to add them to the top of the page once something else has been added to row 1 or to move them around once placed (something I hope is addressed in later updates).

4. Advanced Settings
This lets you choose the look of the menu icons (including popup and sub-menus), Text style, Scrollbars, intro pages (optional), reserved area with password, E-commerce Cart (for shopping, complete with Paypal account linking) and to add RSS Feeds to your site.

Clicking on each of the icons will bring up more options such as the look of the borders for menus, the font and colour of the buttons or the feel of the Scrollbars.

5. Export
This will allow you to either upload the site via FTP to where you wish to host it or save the website to disc to save it as a backup 9or to upload it separately to an FTP site). It will also allow you to batch the project to save to another computer, useful if you have more than one PC which you’re working on (a Laptop, for instance, to continue designing the site while you are away from home).

Choosing to Upload the site will give you a page with profile details to fill in. You will need to know the FTP address, username and password for your hosting site to continue. The Initial Directory will also need to be filled in if your site is not in the root directory of the FTP address.

Next, choose Export All Website Files. If you are building and uploading for the first time, the other options will be greyed out. Once you have uploaded and want to amend the site, you will have the option of just uploading those areas you have changed. This is recommended as it makes the uploading process much faster.

Pressing Next will take you to the FTP site details. Here you will see your directory structure on the FTP site (folders, web-pages etc). Clicking Start will begin the process of uploading the site.

That’s it! Your website should now be viewable online.
