Well the main downer is that both the buyer and seller need to be registered, people cannot just put card details in and pay you. However there are no fees for accepting payments, just 99p every time you transfer money to your bank account.

www.nochex.co.uk

I find it best to use it as an option and tell buyer I am happy to wait whilst they register - can take 3 business days to do so because of how they do registrations, check out the website for details, it's not as popular as Paypal but cheaper. Most peope I deal with seem happy to send cheques.

Beware the costs though..... Paypal takes money off each payment, then takes a £1 every time you transfer the money to your bank account, and you have to have over £20 to be able to transfer the cash.....

I started using it but gave up, back to cheques, nochex and postal orders for my buyers !

If you do do it then you have to upgrade to a premium account to allow Paypal users to use credit cards to send you money, as a regular member they can only send money they load into their account, and seeing as it costs them to do this no one does do it.

Also, by letting the buyer use Paypal it makes it much easier for someone to get at you if they are unhappy with the item for stupid reasons - I.e. they damage it themselves.

I'd take a careful look at all the info before you make the decision, a lot depends on what you sell. If it is stuff like games / cds / DVD then it may be worth it depending on what kind of profit you make on each sale, but if it's lower value stuff or allsorts like I sell then you may not see much benefit.

Just select the PayPal option when setting up your auction. You shouldn't have to start a new business type account with PayPal as long as your transactions stay under a certain amount...I think. Did that help? Probably not. Sorry.
