Anyway I digress, now that European football has started again those unlucky souls such as myself that only have terrestrial T.V actually have a chance to watch some live football and I have noticed a few things that happen throughout the 90mins that have started to increase in regularity. They are pretty small things but they surely have an impact on the outcome.
1.Obstruction. The obstruction rule I think is one that the largely depends on the referee, but one thing that all referee’s seem to ignore is this so called “shepherding” the ball out of play. Anywhere else on the pitch this would be considered to be obstruction, so why are defenders constantly aloud to get away with it?
2.Beist towards goalkeepers. It seems now that all a keeper has to do as fall over when an opposition’s player is in his vicinity and he is awarded a free kick. It seems to particularly happen during set plays such as free kicks and corners, if the keeper gets near to the ball but doesn’t keep hold of it most referees will adjudge him to have been fouled. If to midfield players jump in the outfield for a ball and collide in the air no free kick is given unless one player in leading with an elbow or using the other person to climb higher, but goalkeepers are treated differently. Surely keepers don’t need any more of an advantage over the attackers, they already have the distinct advantage of being able to use their hands.
There are many other little things such as diving and faking injures which perhaps shouldn’t be apart of the beautiful game but I think with out these we would miss out some of the more light hearted amusing moments (I’m looking at you Rivaldo and more recently Lauren).
I accept that it is unlikely any of these things will ever be ironed out, but if you could what rules would you like to be reinforced more strictly or even changed?
Not everything goes the keepers way though, it's very easy for keepers to get sent off for professional fouls. Accidentally handling outside the area, bringing a player down when going for the ball etc.
