This is not a whiney post saying, “Football is being ruined by money” or saying “its only a game why get so worked up over it” in fact I am likely to be as worked up as any other red blooded male, also being a Liverpool fan I notice I seem to be even more worked up of late! (Why can’t all our oppositions goalkeeper’s play like floundering Frenchman Fabien Cool?)

Anyway I digress, now that European football has started again those unlucky souls such as myself that only have terrestrial T.V actually have a chance to watch some live football and I have noticed a few things that happen throughout the 90mins that have started to increase in regularity. They are pretty small things but they surely have an impact on the outcome.

1.Obstruction. The obstruction rule I think is one that the largely depends on the referee, but one thing that all referee’s seem to ignore is this so called “shepherding” the ball out of play. Anywhere else on the pitch this would be considered to be obstruction, so why are defenders constantly aloud to get away with it?

2.Beist towards goalkeepers. It seems now that all a keeper has to do as fall over when an opposition’s player is in his vicinity and he is awarded a free kick. It seems to particularly happen during set plays such as free kicks and corners, if the keeper gets near to the ball but doesn’t keep hold of it most referees will adjudge him to have been fouled. If to midfield players jump in the outfield for a ball and collide in the air no free kick is given unless one player in leading with an elbow or using the other person to climb higher, but goalkeepers are treated differently. Surely keepers don’t need any more of an advantage over the attackers, they already have the distinct advantage of being able to use their hands.

There are many other little things such as diving and faking injures which perhaps shouldn’t be apart of the beautiful game but I think with out these we would miss out some of the more light hearted amusing moments (I’m looking at you Rivaldo and more recently Lauren).

I accept that it is unlikely any of these things will ever be ironed out, but if you could what rules would you like to be reinforced more strictly or even changed?

Yes. But it would be difficult to do it anyother way. Especially on set pieces. In most set-piece situations, it's possible to have 16 or more players in the 18 yard box. It's hard even for 3 or 4 officials to see exactly what goes on once the ball starts moving. Also, keepers are more likely to get injured if fouled during a set piece, since a high ball into the box will result in the keeper diving athletically in some unnatural direction to pluck it out of the air before someone gets a head to it.

Not everything goes the keepers way though, it's very easy for keepers to get sent off for professional fouls. Accidentally handling outside the area, bringing a player down when going for the ball etc.

Do you think that goalkeepers are over protected?

I think shepherding is allowed because in most cases, the defender gets to the ball first, and could easilly kick it wherever without the opposing player who is trying to get to the ball having any say in the matter. Therefore, the defender is in possession, but just hasn't touched the ball, which is why the player trying to keep the ball in is more likely to concede a foul than win one.
