I wonder - is this really fair?
For one thing, though there are many poor games released now, with only their graphics as a selling point, poor games are not a new thing. For every game you look back on with favourable nostalgia, how many dozens more fell by the wayside and you've now forgotton ever existed?
Perhaps it seems unfair that games which aren't that great but look nice can sell fairly well, but this is only because the gaming industry has grown so much. If you check out the sales figures, you'll probably find out that relative to the best of the bunch, games with poor gameplay sell no better than they used to. It's just a credit to the industry that these games will no longer sink without trace.
Personally, I think that we are getting just as many if not more great titles than we used to.
Of course there are other factors which influence people's opinions of the older generations of games. For one thing, we're all older now than we used to be. As much as we'd like to think our opinions of quality remain consistent, it simply isn't true. Being older will affect our opinions. I for one can't say I get excited about games in the same way as I used to. Okay, so there's still anticipation when a hot realease comes around, but I'm pretty sure I'd get a whole lot more excited if I was eight years younger (which would make me nearly ten). As such, our opinions of older games are biased due to the fun we knew we had playing them.
I would say that if you asked kids now, they'd be perfectly happy with the gameplay around in this modern era, yet they would not be so impressed with the games us more 'mature' grew up with.
Anothe rpoint is that with more and more powerful consoles, games are less restricted, and it is certain that the overall standard of gameplay HAS improved, though not as much as the standard of graphics - if you can even compare the two.
That's just my opinion though, and like I said, we're all biased to the older games whether we like it or not.
