The film starts with Max Payne drowning, sinking towards the bottom of a large lake where many dead bodies are seen, while under the surface you see flashbacks of his wife and baby in their old house, and showing them both dead. Then the film skips back a week or so to where Max works, at the cold unit in the police station, where he deals with all cases that have no more leads and are pretty much declared dead. Max is constantly haunted by the murder of his family and uses his knowledge as a cop and his contacts to delve into the underworld of the city and try to find the people responsible for the crime. The plot of the story is based completely on this, the friends and enemies he makes on the way, a new drug which is causing strange deaths and the secret behind Max Payne’s families death.
So while the plot may not seem like the most original in the world, when you actually start watching it, things do take some good twists and interesting turns. Not always for the best, but it does get a bit deeper than it first looks and the main emphasis on all of this is the drug that is seen constantly in the film. Some aspects id didn’t find the hardest to guess what would happen next, or how it would all end up, but there were some moments when you find yourself thinking, what could happen next? So for me the plot is above average but let down but some obvious choices.
The cast all do a pretty good job, from the sexy Olga Kurylenko who plays a drug user named Natasha, to the once bad boy, now actor Mark Wahlberg. I did however find at times there was some over acting and the usual, how did he not get hit by any of those bullets scene. If you have a dozen cops firing machine guns at close range, you would think the person running is pretty screwed! It is however how action films have to pan out and for me they sometimes suffer by the main character being a bit too un-touchable. But this is just an opinion, I know plenty of people do not mind it.
So an ok story with some good acting, with any action film, one of the most important things – whats the action like? Well not bad in places, some nice shoot out moments, but while Max wields a trusty pump action shotgun to blast his enemies back with considerable power, there are still times when it all seems a bit too easy for him. Most action scenes are short lived but have some good parts.
I thought Max Payne was an ok film. With a average (ish) plot, some good action scenes but obvious plot choices and a few scenes which I found myself laughing at due to the “drug effects” – but to explain them would ruin parts of the story. As I said originally, I can’t remember the game so I can’t say if fans will be pleased or not, but I found it a film worth watching, I would never go back and see it again, so if you do not wish to pay the prices of your local cinema, I would wait for a rental on this one.
Overall 6.5/10
Thanks for changing it
