There is sod all I haven't tried. Routers, gateways, ICS;
Is it literally "plug in to gateway, plug gateway into wall", because I sure as hell would like that.
Makes all the difference in the world.
Find your pc MAC address from the network connections page in XP and then change your router MAC address or clone it to be the same as your PC which already uses the NET and it'll owrk after that.

Been there, done that :P
Find your PC MAC address and change the adress of your router to be the same, or use the clone address feature with just your PC which works on the connection plugged into the router and it should work after that.
You can't just plug any device into your cable modem, Telewest and NTL don't let you.

I know your not BT, but this might help...
Right, here is how the story goes:
...
Firstly, got me a gateway (ie. a modem/router combo thinge), which is a BT Voyager 205. Tried plugging it straight into the wall (ie. Xbox -> 205 -> Wall), and there were issues with the DNS servers. It said "if you are using a router, make sure your DNS settings are set to automatic", which mine were. Still nothing. I phoned the Live technical support line and they said that they had had many a problem with this router. They told me to configure the router through my PC. To begin with, I checked with my ISP that the router would work fine on their line, and they said it'd be fine. So I went about setting up the router, installing drivers and whatnot. Got to the end of the installation, and did a health check thinge, and it said "you are successfuly connected". Which is odd really, because I wasn't. I could open the window to the configuration manager ok, but it was when I opened IE that it got a bit weird. It came to a page called "BTWholesale", which is odd. Also, despite the ISP telling me otherwise, there was, apparently, a clash, whereby the router was looking for a BT Broadband line, and, what with me not having one, couldn't find it.
It somehow insisted I was connected, despite me being unable to get past this damn "BTWholesale" page.
....
If you can see another way round this, than to get a gateway, one that is recommended say, for Live, then please, please tell me.
I'll score 4 own goals when we next play Pro Evo if you can sort it out :P
Is this shoving your modem straight into the X-Box instead of going through a router?
The X-Box should just automatically detect the DNS settings, and all you have to do is input your ISP Username and Password.
If it's not detecting the DNS settings automatically you could enter them, just shove your modem into your PC, connect to the net and type "Ipconfig/ all" into the command prompt. This should display the DNS server IP addresses.
What Error messages are you getting?
