Online play on PlayStation 2 in Europe will not be officially launched until the third quarter of 2003, according to well placed industry insiders, As we reported last week, the delays to consumer testing of the online service makes SCEE's planned "Spring" release seem unlikely, with new information from insiders ostensibly backing this up.
One retail source operating under conditions of anonymity today told us that they understood the service would not be up and running before Q3, meaning July at the earliest, with another insider going as far as stating "October" for launch.
We contacted Sony for a response and a spokesperson told us: "We still plan to launch online gaming this Spring." When pressed on this vague date, the spokesperson told us Sony's definition of "Spring" runs to May, and that it was still on track to launch within this time period.
But industry watchers have less confidence in this date and with testing delayed until April, a slip looks, on the surface, likely. But whatever the case, we should know the truth shortly, with Sony PR telling us: "We expect to be making an announcement within the next two weeks."
We'll bring you full details as soon as they are released.

Looks like Sony are slipping somewhat...

Why go online? We already have the PC.
*Imagines*
*Drools*
And everyone thought Nintendo had no hope of going online.
Bad luck for PS2.
