Now back to the post. Over the course of the week, I've heard lots of random music, not much of it was outstanding, but thankfully, none of it was abysmal (except when Avril Lavigne played on the radio, that was horrific). And because of this, and my impending boredom over the next 5/6 hours, I'm gonna give a little run down of what I have indeed been listening to.
First of all, let's go for some of the music I've been listening to that you probably have never heard of, and this will start with Ebz - F6 G5.
This song is actually taken from the game 'Rez' for PS2, which, if you've played through, you will recognise from the Lost Area. It really is one of the most simple-sounding tunes I've heard, giving it a very minimalistic feel, and although a genre for it is hard to find, all settle for electronica (reluctantly). Thankfully, it's not too deep into this genre, and therefore, it can appeal to many more people. However, it is still quite a niche genre, and some will despise.
Album : Rez - A Gamer's Guide To.. (Import)
Other Similar : Adam Freeland with 'Fear', Keichii Sugiyama with 'Buggy Running Beeps' and also with 'Creation State (of Art)'
I have also been listening to some really good songs from the eighties, after growing a love for them from repeated plays by my dad. There are 2 songs of which I've found to be utterly great, 'Sex Dwarf' by Soft Cell and 'I Ran (So Far Away)' by Flock of Seaguls.
The former of the two is catchy, and as the title suggests, it has some naughty words, but hey, this it's great music. The tune is typically eighties, with lyrics such as 'Isn't it nice, sugar and spice, luring disco dollies to a life full of vice' and with many a synth sound and voice change. The latter, the song in the adverts from Grand Theft Auto : Vice City, is short, but extremely catchy, it's unbelievable. You can play it, and play it again, and still be humming along hours later. Both of these songs give a good vibe of the eighties to those who couldn't experience the real thing, and are suitable for anyone who wants to find out more about the music of the eighties.
Album : 'Soft Cell' and 'Best of the Eighties'
Other Similar : Tainted Love by Soft Cell (and also covered by Marilyn Manson)
Coming back a couple of decades brings us to some more modern music. My choice of 'Completely Undiscovered Genius' goes to calpomatt, who's songs on www.acidplanet.com (especially 'Driven' and 'El Mariachi') have inspired me to write things I've never even considered before. The songs are a mix of electronica, ambient, classical & cinematique never fail to amaze me. And theres no point, in any of the songs, that there is only 1 genre alone, which may seem risky, but each and every sound seems perfectly placed. He also does sound loops (www.flashkit.com) which I discovered first, but there are definitely much, much better, if not in style, but because they are longer, and there is much more to enjoy. Inspired.
There's more however, if thats not enough for you to buy (and download) in one night & morning. A few other favourites of mine at the moment include Aqualung (the man behind the song on the VW Bettle advert) with songs 'Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell on You)' and also 'Good Times Gonna Come', both in a similar vein to David Gray. The 3rd single, 'If I Fall', is out very soon. I recently discovered the person behind the 'Shipwrecked' theme and Ford advert, Morcheeba, with the beautiful songs 'The Sea' and 'World Looking In', both are outstanding, and should be got, no matter how. There are so many more, including Moloko with the new song 'Familiar Feelings' which is an excellent track and an older track, 'Remind Me', by Royksopp, which is of equal sugary goodness. Try and get the video as well, it's very smart :D.
Finally, to end the music selection, a random song I've been playing..this week? Dandy Warhols with 'Bohemian Like You'. An older track, one used on a Vodafone advert. If you download it, it'll perk you up. Somehow, it reminds me of uni students?
Anyway, hope you enjoyed my pick of, well, all the music I've heard ever in the last week that I could cram into one nicely sized post. If I do another next week, there will be Counting Crows, Vanessa Carlton, Coldplay and more.
Thanks for reading :)
Thank you.
