I've always thought of myself as the kind of person who gives others the benefit of the doubt. Not to judge them until I've heard their side of the story, but maybe I haven't been as honest to myself as I originally though.
I'm talking about Bret "The Hitman" Hart.
I've always though that with the whole situation back in 1997 with the screw job of Bret by Vince, that it wasn't a screw job at all. It was just Bret being a big baby because he couldn't win a match against someone he didn't particularly liked, just because he felt he was a bigger star than to loose to someone he wasn't friend with.
The feeling I had was that at the end of the day, Vince was the boss. He owned the company, he made the rules, and if he asked Bret to loose the belt to Shaun at the PPV, that Bret should be respectful enough not to argue. It never occurred to me that Vince had other things on his mind as to Bret's final hours in his federation.
All this comes from watching "Wrestling with shadows", Bret's documentary he made while in the World Wrestling Federation. Showing him getting more and more unhappy, well so it seemed. He'd finally decided, after years of service to Vince, to sign a contract with the WCW.
When Vince found out about this, himself and Bret came to the decision of his leaving at the RAW is WAR edition after the Survivor Series pay-per-view. Because Bret would defeat Shaun the night before at the PPV.
This was Bret's wish, as it would allow him to leave the company on a high, 'in a nice way', as he put it. Which, with his years of hard work and success, you would respect and have granted him.
Vince had other idea's, and after telling Bret the plan for the night, after lying to his face, turn around, went to ringside, and stole Bret's moment from underneath him in the space of a few seconds, for no good reason whatsoever I believe. Bret didn't plan on taking the belt to WCW, as he'd clearly said he would give it up the next night on RAW, saying goodbye to his fans, and leaving the company that (I believe) he had a huge part in keeping so big. Instead, he left feeling low, feeling cheated, and feeling stabbed in the back.
All this time, I was under the impression that Vince did what he did for the better of the company .... because Bret wasn't being co-operative. Instead, after watching 'Wrestling with Shadows', I believe Vince stole a part of Bret from him on that night. It led me to feel ashamed to be a fan of a company, run by someone who did something so cold to one of my idols, one of my most favoured wrestlers, one who I would actually call, a hero.
So, in closing, I just want to say ... from the deepest pits of my heart and sole ... Bret, I'm sorry. You really are as great as they say, and I see that now. I never meant to doubt you as I did, and I take it all back.
