IMHO I believe DVD can only truly be experienced when your player is able to play DVD's from any region - more specifically Region 1. I mean, it further expands the catalogue of titles available at your disposal. With some being available whilst the same film is being shown over here in the Cinema, surely that's got to be tempting? Not to mention the often scenario of superior extras on a Region 1 release as opposed to it's Region 2 counterpart.

Although in recent months, *some* companies have been trying to discourage the personal importation of Region 1 titles with the implementation of the RCE technology on a few titles such as; Hollow Man and The Patriot. Although I cannot imagine this discouraging the DVD enthusiast in the long-run as this technology has been.

Region 2 still has a way to go yet before it gains Region 1. Of course, they'll be titles like Snatch that'll see the light of day here first since it's a British based film. However, who's to say that the Region 1 release won't have those superior extras?

Thoughts?

I dont care in which region a DVD is released first, all this regional variation should be scrapped. The world is increasingly becoming an international marketplace with the event of the WWW. Its so easy to buy a US DVD now the whole idea of controlling releases is now silly, the industry should rethink and let us buy films from anywhere and watch them anywhere!

Good call! I mean, the US will probably never see Only Fools & Horses on DVD.

Although, I purchase movies mainly myself, so importing Region 1 titles is often the route I take. However, when I purchase TV shows on DVD, it's usually Region 2 - take Buffy The Vampire Slayer for example.

You have to remember that there are plenty of titles that have appeared on Region 2 and not on Region 1. Yes, you read that right, Britain is fighting back in the DVD region wars, and where would we be without our great British comedies and films?

Okay, so region 1 titles sometimes have better options and extra features, but more region 2 stuff comes out every day with extras that are not on the region 1 discs.
