Wasn't there an banner ad that said that on here the other day.
I haven't seen it since.
Anyway I was thinking about it, and have we really?
Obviously yes in terms of graphics, but when it comes down to raw gameplay, Space Invaders was pretty damn good.
The speed would slowly increase until it became quite frantic, and there was always the temptation to have just one more go to try to get your high score!
Mind you when you compare it to the games of today it is very basic, but sometimes something you can just play for a few minutes then walk away from (or not) can be more fun than a game that you really need to get into before you can get anywhere, and you need to devote a few hours to it once you start playing.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that sometimes the basic games are better than these huge epic games, especially when your games playing time can sometimes be a little limited!

However, this has been addressed in recent years, in particular Resident Evil. The first RE gave a ranking based on number of saves/kills/bullets used etc. This turned an epic game into a more challenging one.
RE2 continued this trend.
Metal Gear Solid also brought more challenges. Did you know there are over 50 rankings you can get in the game? All the rankings were based on time taken, times sighted, health pickups used, accuracy, kills etc, which made it a very engaging RPG/Shootemup. Perhaps this is something we might eventually see on the larger RPGs like FF or Zelda.
However, RPG's have to be finely balanced between taking the time to savour the game and the time taken to finish it, so rankings should not be based on time taken but other factors.
