Horror has always been one of the most entertaining genres of movies. Ever since I can remember I have been it to horror and am lucky enough to own over fifty scary movies. There have been some magnificent films in the past and some great eras such as the mid 70's, 80's and early 90's. Todays horror is somewhat disappointing and doesnt even come close to the cult classics, with the odd exception such as The Blair Witch.
It has come a long way since the days of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy, and there have been some brilliant stories told, and quite possibly some of the most unforgettable scenes ever. Not to forget the hundreds of imitated slasher movies that appeared after Hitchcocks Psycho.
Here is my opinion on what I believe to be the best and most influential top ten horror movies ever:

1.FRANKENSTEIN (1931): This is really where it all started. Probably the most important horror flick made, this was really what set the ball rolling. There are some memorable scenes, from where the monster first makes an appearance to the way he staggers across the screen. There were also some great effects used such as the neck bolts and daunting eyes. This was one believable story, frightening at the time maybe not now though, and of course being in black and white just helped the atmosphere.

2.PSYCHO (1960): The platform for all slasher movies. This was probably Hitchcocks most famous film. He had the chance to shoot it in colour but decided against it as black and white make it all the more full of suspense, apparently so. More psycholiogical than an other film this was an absolute masterpiece. The shower scene will always go down in history and the Bates motel is enough to send shivers down your spine!! The 1999 remake is an insult and the acting is just abysmal!!

3.THE BIRDS (1961): Another Hitchcock epic. At the time the effects were groundbreaking and even now they look great. This was one ambitious film and the end results more than impressed. It may not be a real horror but like Psycho again this was more psychological than anything. The story was brilliantly written and the thought of birds turning against the human race is terrifying. There hasnt really been anything else that matches up to this in terms of quality, a real treat!!

4.THE EXORCIST (1973): Some claim this to be the best horror movie ever and who am I to disagree. Banned for a long time due to its content it is a powerfull film that will have you jumping all the way through it, a sign of classic horror to still scare even now. The effects look gruesome and some scenes will stick with you like the spinning head or the sick scene. Movie making at its highest quality and one that shouldnt be missed. Word is that a prequel could be in the works.

5.THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974): An unforgettable film. Like the Exorcist this too was banned in the UK for years and has only in recent times been available. This another example of how to make horror a success. Directed by Tobe Hooper the introduction of the intimidating Leatherface is spectacular to say the least. He appears in a house where it seems everything is made from parts of animals and the human body, really sickening. A cult classic!!

6.HALLOWEEN (1978): Perhaps John Carpenters finest moment. This is one of my favourite of all horror films and was the one that really set the trend for further slasher imitations. It is a dark film that never lacks atmsphere or suspense. What helped the film atmosphericly wise was the awesome music which Carpenter himself produced. It takes its time to get into things but its all well worth it once you see Michael Myers and start to feel fear. A classic, maybe intended as a 'teen' flick but an enjoyable one at that!! Halloween 2 worth watching but poor sequels after that.

7.THE SHINING (1980): Based on the brilliant novel by Stephen King, the film does a good job in translating between the two. The story is quite unusual in terms that it isnt out and out horror, but the results are great. There are plenty of nerve racking moments and you are always waiting for some unsettling scenes. The way it was filmed worked incredibly well, and another worthy horror for any fan to watch. Best scene the now famous smashing th axe through the door!! Great!!

8.A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984): I remember watching this when I was younger and it scared me so much that I couldnt sleep for a week. I was always expecting Freddy to jump out and get me. Anyway a film that confuses you between whats real and whats not, expertly written and something that will keep you up from falling asleep. I didnt realise how long ago this was made, another influential scary movie!! This is the best in the series, the sequels are somewhat disappointing yet again!!

9.HELLRAISER (1987): A new side to horror. Each one of the Hellraiser films are just so amazing they have to be up there with the best. Some mind blowing effects, some scenes that will make you shiver, some interesting plot developments and plenty of twists. The Cenobites look outstanding and frightening and this is a side of horror that cannot be overlooked. Clive Barker has opened up new doors!!(sorry)

10.THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999): My favourite of all modern day horror. Still one of the most scariest movies ever made, so lifelike and believable that is frightning in its own right. Fantastic story, some quality acting and some truely terrifying stuff. Will scare the daylights out of you but will also pull you back for more. This is just what the horror film industry needed, unfortunately the sequel is not!!

I quite enjoyed the TV series of The Stand. A lot of people have told me they don't like it, but I think the characterisations are just right. Luckily this film should be coming to UK DVD soon and it's got some nice extras on it as well.

I though BlairWitch was poor, Ive seen scarier things on late night TV.
For me a scary movie is one where the plot is half believeable even normal and then everyone just gets killed.... Final Destination has to be the only good horror movie Ive seen lately, definately worth getting.
