This isn't a moan about this site either, it's just an example. A considerable amount of people in the western world will call a person a muppet for listening to a different style of music than they listen to, dressing differently, driving a certain car/bike (Harleys=pants)...
See! Even I do it. We all do. But is this a good thing?
Well, in theory, and generally in practice, yes. Without our own opinions we would all be the same. We would wear the same clothes, listen to the same music (pop, i'd imagine), and we'd have nothing to talk about down the pub. We, in the society we live in, have been brought up to have our own opinions, and people without them are critisized. Different peoples opinions and attitudes towards different things is what makes this place interesting, as it does the rest of the world.
The problem is, though, is that people can take offence from opinion. People may mock Rap/Hiphop because it's not their thing, but then because it's roots are in black culture, it could be deemed by some as racist to not accept it. The majority of men like pornography, but then some women will take offence from it, and be offended by you for liking it.
What people are failing to realise that at the end of the day, it's not as if these people are saying 'Hiphop is rubbish' and therefore it is a fact, it is purely their opinion. People who take offence with it are the ones who have the problem as they cannot see further than their own opinions to hear what others have to say.
What am I trying to say? I'm not quite sure.
Perhaps I'm trying to say that if someone likes something that you don't it doesn't give you the right to call them a stroker (though free speech is a seperate issue).
Perhaps I'm saying that if someone calls you a stroker for liking something they deem sad then you should accept that this person is at fault for not trying to see your side.
Perhaps I'm even saying that we should all be more accepting towards one another, as at the end of the day we all have our own opinions, but if we hate something we should have the control to keep it to ourselves instead of spouting off towards people who feel passionate about the topic.
Take from this what you like. Call me a stroker if you like, I don't care, that's your opinion. But the next time someone critisizes something you like, how about arguing your case constructively rather than taking offence, as at least it leads to a more interesting argument.
Thanks (if you made it this far...)
Slave.
Does anyone have anything sensible to say? If I wanted the thread ripped apart I would have put it in FOG Chat...
> Nah. You're talking a load of crap, and Hip Hop is gay.
Glad you're getting into the spirit of the thread there, IB.
