Turns out my friend has Hodgkins Diesease.....which apparently is 'very treatable'.

It has a very high survival rate though. 85% of patients are cured after the inital treatment.

Why is it tactless? The friend was diagnosed with cancer first, right?

Hmmm. A friend of mine had testicular cancer, and I can tell you know that radio and chemotherapy are among the least pleasant treatments someone can come across.
Tell your friend to keep his chin up, as he has the better part of a year of hell and sickness to look forward to.
