With the whole millimetres of snow these parts of the world got last night and the local council’s total inability to grit roads mean I’ve been stranded. Thinking of somewhere better to be marooned, how about a SR Island Disks? Taking into consideration the section of the forum we’re on, our island somehow has a stereo system, DVD playing capabilities and a reading light. You’ve got five songs, three books, three DVD and one TV channel; provide good reasons or I’ll wish the island’s local cannibals on you.

SONGS

1. Feel Flows by The Beach Boys
Considering that your taste in music fluctuates with mood, this is probably my most consistent choice for favourite song ever. The calming, psychedelic melody would fit in perfectly with a few palm trees and the lapping sea to create a totally relaxed atmosphere (pretty hand as you’re likely to be rather worked up about being stranded!). It would also remind me of one of my favourite moments in film – when Cameron Crowe took a funny wee song I though only I knew about and made thousands of auditoriums Worldwide nod along.

2. Johnny B. Goode covered by The Beatles
Taken from the Live At The BBC Secessions this has got to be the greatest cover versions ever. To begin with, it’s a song worth covering. One of not only the original, but still the best Rock and Roll songs ever done by arguable the best Rock and Roll four piece. The iconic solo is played note perfect by Harrison, but it is Lennon’s vocals that make it so special. It’s the same rasping, about-to-loose-my-voice near yell of Twist and Shout and it works perfectly. Somehow they manage to make the song their own despite performing it almost identical to the original, but with bags of attitude.

3. Sabotage by The Beastie Boys
Grrrrrrrr! I’m stuck on an island; I’m going to be a little narked. Need some shouting and mild aggression to relieve the tension for when psychedelic West-cost rock won’t cut it. So I’ll just have to stick this on as loud as possible and jump around on the sand – it’s alright, there’ll be no one there to see me. This is also my favourite driving song, pity about the lack of car on the island.

4. All I Want by Joni Mitchell

Bound to get lonely at sometime, so this is a song to wallow in and feel sorry for myself. Joni’s voice is simply stunning on this track so it’ll be a pleasant reminder of the fairer sex. That said, she can still bash out a cracking wee melody on her acoustic guitar so at least I’ll be wallowing in style.

5. Come by Lemon Jelly

A musical sedative to ease late night fears of wild animals and hungry natives. There’ll be lots of long lazy nights on the beach and this track fits the laid-back mood. In fact, this track alone would make a great soundtrack to being stuck on a desert island – provided you were one of those “accept it” types rather than the annoying proactive, dentist scare-er Tom Hanks. However, on the off chance that you do have female company, this is a great get-her-in-the-mood song. At eight minutes long it conveniently leaves you with a good two or three minutes of music to accompany the traditional close of play cigarette too.

DVDs

1. Rear Window
For no other reason than it’s my favourite film ever ever ever. Starts of with a dreamy group making it – Alfred Hitchcock, Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly just aren’t going to disappoint. Add a wonderfully tense, paranoid script and the fact the above are all at the tops of their game and you’re laughing. Its warnings about getting involved in the affairs of others and general voyeurism would be a bit redundant to someone stuck on their own though…

2. Lord of the Rings: Special Edition
Preferably the much hyped nine disk, cut-into-one-film, edition released after The Return of the King. However, if I somehow get stranded before that I’ll make do with the existing special edition of the first film – you can Fed Ex me the complete package later, something to look forward to I guess. Anyway, good film to start with. Nice bit of escapism and total fantasy beautifully shot. The real reason for the inclusion is the extra features. There are plenty of better films out there, but none have had this much care put into providing a detailed, entertaining and comprehensive package of extras. It’d take weeks to watch it all and, let’s face it; I’m going to be looking to kill time.

3. There’s Something About Mary
Strange choice, I’ll give you that, but there is a logic to it. This is a pretty average film, but it is funny and as I haven’t got a comedy yet this will have to do. However, there are other vastly superior comedies, so why this one? Well a guy stuck alone on an island is going to need some eye-candy – enter Ms Diaz (not literally, unfortunately).

BOOKS

1. Death Of A Salesman
Or Some People Have It Worse. Fantastic, modern play about a salesman dying, funnily enough. Wiley’s never-give-up attitude may act as some form of inspiration as I get sick of eating coconuts and covered in sunburn. Even when there is no possibility of success he still plucks away and puts a brave face on it. Ermm… unfortunately it is just a very thinly veiled façade and he kills himself… still, good play.

2. Neither Here Nor There
This will make up for the shortfall in laughs provided by the DVDs. You can’t go wrong with Bill Bryson and this is, for my money, his best book. His diatribes about how rubbish modern America is are hilarious and will also remind me that I’m maybe not in such a bad situation. No pollution, no taxes, and I’m unlikely to get mugged or murdered, yep, pretty sweet. Also has one of my favourite jokes ever: Bill comments on his woeful Hotel room, “it was so small I had to go out into the corridor to turn around” (well, that’s the gist of it). A deserted desert beach holiday never looked so good.

3. The Worst Case Scenario Survival Guide
I’ve never had any need or desire to read this up to now, but suddenly it could be very useful…

TV Channel

Got to by Channel 4, hasn’t it. It’s got the gritty drama of The Sopranos, OZ and Six Feet Under mixed with the light comedy of Fraser and The Book Group. There’s also the habit of showing great movies, nightly news, and plenty of solid, informative and entertaining documentaries. Pretty much a hands down, unopposed winner… though Sky Sports for the football looks attractive too…

You somehow get stranded on an island with a limited selection of equipment and titles, and a power supply. With this in mind, I don't think you need to worry about the practicalities of the Region system!

But the T.V channel would probably be Channel 4, but maybe BBC2, for Simpsons purpouses.

These are too hard. I have no favourites in songs, I'd just pick a handful that are good and won't get annoying. Books I'm not into enough. And Dvds, not too sure right now.

Songs:

Stand Inside Your Love - Smashing Pumpkins

My favourite song ever, and one that is full of meaning and cool stuff. That sounded really teenage didn't it? Ah well....it rules.

Luna - Smashing Pumpkins

Be-au-ti-ful.

Aurora - Foo Fighters

A lovely little number. I could listen to this anywhere.

Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix

So I have some air guitar to do....

Only In Dreams - Weezer

Another fantastic song. Long, lovely and breathtaking.

-----

DVDs.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

A fantastic film, and one that reminds me of...er......have a good time in the face of adversity. And an evil nurse....

Vieuphoria - Smashing Pumpkins

More air guitar......

American Beauty

Dark, but a fantastic film all the same. And the message is nice too.

-----

Books? 1984 - Orwell.

More thoughts in this than in a convention of philosephers.

Lord Of The Rings -

If I get bored...

Thats it.

Dunno if its the correct number of, but no TV for me.

:D

SONGS
Refuse/Resist - Sepultura
Because it's still one of the most ferocious songs ever. Even the heartbeat and muted "Godzilla!" shout opening is heavier than Slipknot with a lot of heavy things.

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
1st song I ever heard from them and still makes me happy.

Sinkemlow - Clutch
"The ash turned to confetti!
Hallelujah!"

Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
Because I like it.

Champagne Supernova - Oasis
Personal reasons

BOOKS
American Scream - Bill Hicks bio.
Inspiration.

King Blood - Simon Clark
Apocalyptic horror. And Leeds gets cooked from the inside

The Princess Bride - William Goldman
I don't need to explain why. This was before explaining was invented but after words.

DVD
Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back
"We'll #### your mothers and make you watch like the whiny b###es you are"

The Matrix
I still enjoy this one, years after the fact

JFK
Always find something new in this one.
Today I think the entire world did it.

TV Channel
Nope.

From the Packet

Lostboy still not found so still lost shocker

The entrepid local boy, Gonzo, is still lost, though relatives have taken comfort from being able to send him the complete LOTR DVD mega set and a note saying "don't worry we'll find you-where ever you are". The Fed-ex employee will keep an eye out for signs of the man's whereabouts whilst placing the post in the mailbox on an island somewhere in the Pacific. The Mega set DVD should provide hours of entertainment, especially as George Lucas purchased the rights to the DVD and has spliced Jar-Jar Binks into the story, replacing Gollum.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
