Celtic and Rangers have received invitations to a new European tournament.

The plans for a new league - called the Golden Cup - is expected to be discussed at a gathering of the organisers in Madrid on Monday.

A Celtic spokesperson said: "I believe we're welcome to attend the Madrid meeting. Although we won't be sending anyone along we will be keeping in touch with its progress."

Rangers director and secretary Campbell Ogilvie confirmed: "We've had communication from the Spanish group.

"I think they've written to 24 clubs about a stand-alone tournament to be played in midweeks."

I wonder who the other 22 clubs will be and whether this goes ahead. I would of thought that it will cost alot of money for the fans travelling to see their teams play.

English clubs have been opposed to this for years. If all the other top clubs in europe want to double their fixture list and wear ou their players, let them.

I hope no Premiership teams go to join it.

Yeah, I read about this today.

I also read that it's apparently 3 clubs from Italy, 3 clubs from Spain, 3 clubs from Germany and 4 from England, mixing in with Rangers and Celtic and a few others from various European countries.

Strange.
