Having been capped at every level of international football, from England schoolboys, through amateur caps and under 23 levels, right up to a couple of England caps, he’s clearly the kind of player that Leeds need on the pitch at the moment. He played most of his football in an advanced midfield role, supporting the strikers, but perhaps what Leeds need more on the pitch are his leadership qualities, after losing players that were real leaders, and driving forces behind the team, such as Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer. The loss of Robbie Keane and Robbie Fowler perhaps isn’t the biggest concern of Venables, as he was somewhat top-heavy on quality strikers. He can still put Viduka, Kewell and Smith on his team sheet after all, and if he can fire up the troops from the pitch rather than the dug-out, he might be able to see them rise up the table to a more respectable situation.
The fact that he just turned 60 is not a concern, Leeds United’s only other options were Doris the tea-lady and a 20 stone bloke that has been selling pies at the ground since 1954. Or David Batty, and no one wants that. So to have a man of Venables stature on the pitch will surely be of benefit to Leeds United.
What Leeds really lack now though, are quality central defenders. Danny Mills, Ian Harte and Gary Kelly can all do a job ain the full back positions, but that leaves a huge cap in the middle of the field. With no professional players on Leeds books to play in these positions they’ll have to come up with a drastic plan of action.
Leeds United Chairman Peter Risdale explained their plan. “Well, we’re going to see if we’re allowed to play with two keepers instead. We’ve got Paul Robinson, and he’s a bit tasty, and as I couldn’t get rid of Nigel Martyn, he can go in goal too. Then it won’t matter if the opposition break through on goal, they’ll have twice as hard a time of scoring!”
However, it seems unlikely that the FA will agree to such a plan, as the latest edition of the laws of the game state that a team must consist of one goalkeeper and 10 outfield players.
Leeds next match is the FA Cup fourth round replay against Gillingham, and Venables is asking any fit young fans to bring their boots, and turn up early, they may be needed on the bench. He also had a few words to say on whether he’d still be boss of Leeds United at the end of the month.
“To leave now would be another kick in the teeth of these fans, and to the rest of the staff here at Leeds United. For the time being I’m going to stand by my players. Sorry, player.”
Nicely done. :-D
