Of the three english teams remaining in the competition this year, Man Utd are clearly in the better position of the three, and looking the most likely to go through to the knockout stages. Superb form in the first group stage interrupted only when the reserve team ran out to play against Maccabi Haifa, their good form continued into the second group stage with a flattering 3-1 victory over Swiss champions Basle, who were previously unbeaten at home in their first Champions league campaign. This was followed up by the superb destruction of rival team Deportivo, who had no answer to United's two allowed goals.
This leaves Utd top of their group with all 6 possible points, two ahead of another rival team, Juventus, who will be United's next opponents as the italians visit Old Trafford on the 18th of Feb. A win here all but guarantees passage to the knockout stages for United, but they will also expect points from their final home game in the group stages as they again face Basle. United can only throw away their current good standing as Europe falls apart at their feet. Good luck to them!
Next team on the list is Arsenal who, while they are leading their group as United are, they aren't on full points, and have agathered only 4 of the possible 6. Arsenal initially struggled to qualify for the second stage of the competition, as previous good form gave way to defeats against Auxerre and then Borussia Dortmund during their bizarre "2-1" losing scoreline phase, which saw them lose form not only in europe, but also in domestic competition, as Wayne Rooney triggered Arsenal's first defeat of the season, and it was to be the first of many.
However, by hook or by crook (or even by fortunate results beyond their control), Arsenal got through to the second round and capitalised on their good fortune with a fine 3-1 away victory over italian mid-table outfit Roma. Unfortunately though, their next opponents were mighty Valencia who may not have played their best on the night, were enough to hold Arsenal to a drab 0-0 draw at Highbury.
But things look good for Arsenal, as their next to games take them home and away to Ajax, easilly the weakest team in the group, and the gunners will be expecting at least another 4 points to be coming their way from those two games. Any more points accumulated from the remaining games against Roma or Valencia should see Arsenal through without too much trouble.
Next on the list is the Toon Army, or Newcastle, if you prefer. Newcastle managed to shock pretty much everybody firstly with a poor string of results leading them to lose their first three Champion's League games, and then by recovering to do the impoosble and win the final three to just sneak into the next phase thanks to some heroics from Bellamy. Doing just that is enough for Newcastle to have borken records in the Champions league this season, as no other team has ever managed to turn around three defeats to qualify for the second stage.
However, Newcastle failed miserably to capitalise on their good forune, falling badly to a dreadful 4-1 embarrassment at home against Inter Milan, and then being slapped away as Toon boss Sir Bobby Robson returned to the Nou Camp only to see his side sink 3-1 against an irrepressable Barcelona.
It looks like in order to qualify, Newcastle may have to repeat their first round heroics and pull out all the stops if they hope to make the next round. But having to play away to Inter and also entertain Barcelona, it seems that Newcastle have left themselves a mountain to climb that seems almost impossible to scale.
I won't bother to mention Liverpool, who's embarrassing 3-3 draw against FC Basle delivered them into the clutches of the UEFA Cup, which is far more than their football deserved following their pathetic display away against the Swiss Champs.
Let's have a bit of National Pride and cheer on the remaining English teams in this great competition. May all of them get through, and never meet until the semi-finals!

Heh, funny one mate.
Eg, Barcalona who are hovering 3 points above relegation in La liga but have a 100% record in the champions league.
The you got Real Madrid, who are 2nd in La liga but havnt won in thier last 6 champions league games!
The champions league will be much better next season when Sky get the joint rights with ITV. You'll be able to watch any of the matches on either match day. So you can watch somthin like Milan Vs Madrid instead of Arsenal vs some eastern europeon minnows.
Personally, I coudnt give a toss about any of the other english teams. If United go out, i'll be cheering for Inter Milan. Crespo is the man. I got the Inter home long sleeve shirt with Crespo 9 on the back. He's injured till April though :( So Newcastle might have half a chance against them...
To be honest I find the league stage a little uninspiring, until you get to a stage where you can see "three more points and we're through" and the like.
The knockout stage, now that's exciting.
