Some discs will pause for longer than others, depending on the extent the film data is compressed (between 300-1000k/second, if I remember correctly).
Speaking on a technical level (and believe me I know what I'm talking about here), there is really no excuse for a player manufacturer to make players which show layer changes. Many sub-£200 players don't suffer from them so it's no longer a cost-cutting tactic - an excuse that could be used for older players.
I've got an LG 3350 and layer changes simply don't exist on it - even on discs notorious for long pauses.

I started writing my reply just before you posted this. Spooky eh?
There is a Pioneer 535 available (only a couple of months old, if that) but I wouldn't worry about that being better than yours because its a newer model. From what I've read, unless you them side by side on two BIG tellies there wouldn't be any difference - the remotes are different though, I think.
Take comfort in the fact that Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and other big name players all have layer change problems (some for a full second and longer!).
So i`m not going to frett anymore hehe, and enjoy the pleasures of DVD:)
