Like alot of people i got a DVD player for Christmas, and it`s excellent, i have one query though, does everyone have small pauses now and again on certain DVD`s? I`ve looked around the net and it is said that on Dual player format DVD`s there can be a slight pause when it changes to another layer.
I just want re-assurance from someone out there so i know my DVD player isn`t broke in any way:)

P.S. Doesn`t Dolby 5.1 rock!!

It's nothing to worry about. Your net research has given you the answer. It's when the player is changing from one layer on the disc to another. An alternative option is to put the first half of the film on one side of the disc and the second half on the other. Starship Troopers is one disc this is done on but, thankfully, it's a thing of the past and I don't think there are more than a couple of discs this applies to.

Some discs will pause for longer than others, depending on the extent the film data is compressed (between 300-1000k/second, if I remember correctly).

Speaking on a technical level (and believe me I know what I'm talking about here), there is really no excuse for a player manufacturer to make players which show layer changes. Many sub-£200 players don't suffer from them so it's no longer a cost-cutting tactic - an excuse that could be used for older players.

I've got an LG 3350 and layer changes simply don't exist on it - even on discs notorious for long pauses.

Thanks for your reply Smokedkipper, my DVD player is a Pioneer DV525 from Special reserve (bought in early December, and put away until xmas)and it does pause on some DVD`s such as M:I:2 but it`s only for about half a second and the same on The Green Mile, is there anyway to cure this on the players setup?

Half a second layer changes are about average (maybe a little above). You've bought yourself a well respected player there but it's not a thing you can avoid I'm afraid.

There is a Pioneer 535 available (only a couple of months old, if that) but I wouldn't worry about that being better than yours because its a newer model. From what I've read, unless you them side by side on two BIG tellies there wouldn't be any difference - the remotes are different though, I think.

Take comfort in the fact that Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and other big name players all have layer change problems (some for a full second and longer!).

Thanks SmokedKipper, you`ve eased someones mind here, i did a test yesterday, and asked someone to watch a DVD on my player(The Green Mile) and they loved the film, and then asked them did you notice any pauses and they said no:)....so it`s a case of if you don`t look for them you won`t find them.
So i`m not going to frett anymore hehe, and enjoy the pleasures of DVD:)
