When putting people into uni halls, we didn't have a great deal of say in who we lived with.
Thus this year of the 8 people in my flat, it was unlikely everyone would get along all the time.

Unfortunately, we landed the guy with the combat 18 flat in his window.

With a blatant inability to understand any kind of nationalism, largely because of the haphazard claims of association that underpin it, I don't 'get' where the BNP or related bodies are coming from. That said, you have to doubt whether they've really thought it through that deeply themselves.
However, trying to acknowledge the validity of others' opinions, however much I disagree, I've always taken the line that it has to be allowed to exist in a democracy, at least until laws are broken.

Thinking about it though, the point of laws is to curtail peoples' freedom, particularly where their actions hurt others. This is accpeted as 'right' - we can't have everyone going around doing exactly what they want regardless of those they hurt.
Perhaps by allowing the likes of the BNP to exist, we're saying the equivalent of 'yes, but he doesn't want to obey the law, we shouldn't force him...'

Then again, maybe stopping any political uprising because it's against the government disagree with it would be like labour passing a law ruling that you can't vote tory...

Anyway, while if anyone has thoughts about that I'd be interested to hear them, the reason I started this thread was for the following problem:

1. Person I live with (not by choice) has combat 18 flag in his window, and their ideas in his head.
2. I have black girlfriend, new, who I'd quite like to be able to bring to my flat.

I know that asking him to take the flag down when she comes round and seeing if he'll stay out of her way won't do any good. He's the kind of person who's very inconsiderate to other people, and gets off on confrontation (no surprise I guess). If anything it'll make matters worse.

But things will kick off as they are now.

And to add my own interests to the pot, if things kick off and violence follows (between me and Adolf from down the corridor, while there's anything I can do about it, he won't touch her. Not saying that he would, but I don't know that he wouldn't either), it could lead to all kinds of messy complexities which would largely kill off any chance I'd have of using the law degree to become a solicitor.

(If it might be relevant, I live in uni halls, so maybe they could be pestered into doing something?)

So what the hell do I do now?

Thanks for the advice.
I think I'll warn her about him, then if anything happens go to the uni/police/anyone else who can do stuff to him legally, and only fall back on violence if he puts me in the situation where there's no other choice.

Hopefully nothing will happen, but I have a bad feeling that's just wishful thinking...

Just tell him that your girlfriend is 'skin-coloured' the same as him. He can't argue with that.

On a side note, and kinda off topic, my sister's kids are of 'dual parentage' as their school likes to call them in a politically correct way. Their dad is from Jamaica, their mum is from England, so they're a nice Cadbury's Milk Tray kinda colour.

One is 10, and the other is 8 years old. They have never, ever, been the butt of a racist remark at school or anywhere else for that matter. Which shows how much times are changing for the better.

Basically I'd tell the Combat 18 flag displaying person to get it down, as their a terrorist organisation with no PROVEN BNP links, they we're almost certainly behind the 1999 Brixton bombs, attempted to send letter bombs in 1997 to three London addresses, have threatened Sharon Davies, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Sugar, Paddy Ashdown, more journalists than can be mentioned, Lynette Bruno - quite how threatening an elderly woman advances any cause I don't know.

If you uni hall has some kind of manager/responsible person kinda thing then tell them, or if you have any kind of tutor at university they'd also be good to tell. I'm pretty sure that - as C18 is not a political group but a full on race hate terrorist group - he'd be made to take it down.

Or request to move to another block, explaining why - they're very good reasons and most Universities want to be seen as cracking down on anything like racism - I wouldn't want to be anywhere near this guy 'cause anyone like him is pure scum.

where do you live? If you're nearby, I'll be more than happy to come round and smack him in the face a few times, wrap him in his flag and set it ablaze.

The thing I hate about BNP... they should be allowed to have a party I guess... but they don't even believe in democracy and if they got in power would wipe away opposition, yet would moan if they were banned as a party.

As for you... don't let this swine affect your relationship with your girlfriend... don't even consider him... you live there so you should invite whoever you want without worrying. You could warn her that there is a racist there... if he says anything she or you could easily stand up for yourself.
