Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat
and many others, some good, most awful.
Final Fantasy 'The Spirits Within' now in production.
'Tomb Raider' now in production.
More and more games are being made into films. The trend seems to be accelerating. There are many more rumoured to be in the pipeline, amongst them Metal Gear Solid, Sonic the Hedgehog and yet more Pokemon movies. Do you think Hollywood are running out of good scripts?
Anyway, reason for posting: A little birdie has confirmed to me via email (reliable source) that finally, after all the rumouring that has been going on for years, a long awaited film is going into production. Yes, Resident Evil: The Movie, has reached the casting stage. And guess who's up for the part of Claire? Someone, funnily enough, who starred in The Fifth Element along side Bruce Willis. Yes, it's Milla Jovovich (who played Leeloo in that film, you know, the alien one.)
Now this will have to be something REALLY special to succeed as a film, because the Dawn of the Dead series has been knocking around for decades and Resident Evil is really only a game based on that type of genre. If it fails, it will join the ranks of all the other failed videogame-film efforts, which is not really a good reflection on the gaming industry. It was very likely that many potential gamers who would have originally bought the game prior to the Street Fighter movie were actually turned off the idea having watched the film. But there is hope.
Tomb Raider has an all star cast, all of them well known both here and in the USA (maybe not Chris 'Rimmer' Barry), so there is a very good chance that it will be a hit. Final Fantasy the movie (all done in FMV) I would think would only appeal to a select gaming audience, plus the Sci-Fi fans, but potential sales of the game should rocket should the film prove to be as good as some of the shots and trailers on the movie's site indicate.
But RE: The Movie disturbs me. People like horror movies, but zombie movies are more selective, and zombie movies based on a game more selective still. So whilst there is hope that gaming and movies can finally find an equilibrium in the entertainment industry, I personally believe at this stage that RE could put this combination back a few steps. Early stages though. Meybe if they got De Niro to play Chris....
