A friend of mine is using Windows XP Professional. He wants to be able to share folders on a network, but have them password protected so that only people who've been given the password will be able to access them.

I've tried for a few minutes, but I cannot figure out an easy way to do this under XP. Does anyone here know if it can be done? And if so, how? The sharing options available when you right click a folder don't give the option.

Is there a way to change to win 98 functionailty as well as look and feel? Or some advanced option somwhere in the networking in the control panel that might do it?

If it is to be shared on a network decide which users need to have acces, create a group and grant them rights to the file (usually just read and execute).

You can either do it as permissions or you can encrypt the file/folder.

Be careful with both though cos they can become very messy. They wont be password protected however but depending on who is logged into the machine will decide whether or not they have access.

If I were you I'd go with permissions. The help section of xp is pretty good at explaining and as long as your friend has administrative rights to the machine it can be done easily.

If loads of people use the machine then be careful, like I said just change the permissions of the individual folder first and see how it goes.

If you need more help let me know.. good timing as I'm on a XP Professional Admin course this week.

Just do what I do and grant self permission to owner of the company ;)

Jive is spot on with that advice, with XP you can change settings in the display to classic, therefore it will look more like previous windows editions.

On the network, does everyone login using seperate accounts? If this is the case then when you share the folder you can assign user permissions.

Just for your info, Microsoft's security features are such that, when you share a folder, everyone has rights to that folder so you need to restrict by user basis and remove the "Everyone" group.

Make sure you add yourself in first though, otherwise you wont be able to access it.

If your not in a user based login environment then Aliboy's suggestion of 3rd party software will probably apply.

You can't password protect a folder. You either share it or don't.

You can password protect files but can't have password protect the folder they are in.

Not totally sure if you can go back to the 98 way, doubt it very much.

I'll have a think about it later to see if there may be a way round it. Might require use of additional software though, would that bother him?
