What is the difference between VHS and DVD. Well the only real difference is the price and the quality. It costs something like £150 for a bottom of the range DVD player when you could pick up a VHS for dirt cheap. DVD offers new quality for watching with improved sound and improved picture quality. But the one thing that makes DVD slightly better is the special features eg Gladiator double disc with the making of on it. You cannot pick this up on VHS and the picture is not so good. But DVD's are more expensive than VHS and therefore are maybe not worth the extra £5. In my opinion DVD is going well and virtually everthing that is on VHS is on DVD now. With Playstation 2 and other consoles including a DVD player people are gonna forget about VHS and discs will become the leaders. DVD is a whole step up from VHS and it is now considered an option for buying. If you intend to get one get it from SR for they save about £50.

Hm! Soon you will be able to buy affordable recordable DVD (you can buy it now, but it's loads of money) and then it will truly replace video.

Think about it though, you get a video recorder mainly to record films etc from TV. TV reception is not always top quality (even on digital sets) so you don't really need a top quality recorder to do this justice. Watching films on the other hand is different. With DVD you can get excellent quality sound and visuals and have loads of extra features, plus (as everyone else has already said) you get the option of getting to certain bits of the film in seconds and no tape stretching when you freeze frame, only a perfect picture.

So, get a sub £50 video recorder and a nice DVD player. Sorted!

I think that buying a computer dvd is fine but you must buy those adaptors which connect to the pc enabling you to watch it on the tv. This way you save lots of money but you also risk it not being as good quality. There are many questions that still need to be asked about the dvd and it's roll in the future and wheter or not it is going to become standard with a tv. From what I have heard and read computer dvd players are not worth investing in at the momement at i would stay clear from them until they are improved. PS2 includes a dvd player but it is not very good for most people because it does not include a remote control and it is genrally not regarded very high. I have also noticed that mission impossible 2 has a sticker quoting " Now Compatible with Playstation 2 "

What is this suppsoed to mean. That it requires a special type of rom to run. DVD is worth the money now in my opinion because of all the features it boasts over VHS. The prices will go down even more as they are less advanced in technology. All I know is that the old VHS is saying it's final words as the DVD is popular and selling very well as christmas presents.

Video Watching has evolved and we must adapt like everyone else!

Pc Dvd is no way near as good as the normal dvd. It is no way near as fun to watch on your monitor.

You can't record your favourite TV shows on a DVD though, and as half of the films I watched are taped from Sky by my brother for me, I shalln't be buying one just yet...

DVD is here to stay, that's for sure, but it's not just because of the quality of the discs. The format is ideal for people who love films, you can get straight to an important scene or learn all about the making of the film from the director or producer, you can get a look behind the scenes or laugh at the outtakes. DVDs offer something new, the extras do make it worth the extra cost, but they aren't the only thing that makes them worth buying.

Some DVDs are becoming budget already, you can pick up some classics for only £9.99 and even £15.99 is not that much more than the same film would be on VHS. Even better is the sound quality with a Dolby Digital set up, done correctly, the films could quite literally blow you away!
