The FA are continuing to maintain a philosophical attitude towards claims by Tony Cascarino that a £30,000 cheque had been written out by one losing gambler on the flight home from the Far East.
No official investigation has started into the reports, even though some newspapers have named the player supposedly nicknamed 'lucky' during the tournament.
An FA spokesman insisted: "We will condemn it if someone can show us that excessive gambling is going on. If it can be proved and someone comes forward with that proof, then of course we would look at the issue very closely.
"But we are being asked questions to which we do not have any firm answers. In fairness, the players, when they are with England, don't drink and they don't socialise.
"There is nothing illegal about playing cards. The players have consistently shown exemplary behaviour when representing their country, on and off the pitch."
Regular card players in the England squad are said to be anxious to impress upon Sven-Goran Eriksson that any gambling only took place during their free time and not when they were preparing for games.
Gambling has nevertheless hit the headlines this week, with Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen admitting that he lost £400,000 in a London casino.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has also revealed that Manchester United players play cards for money on away trips.
Most likely the meanings were wrongly translated.
That was in the official press release about the situation from Ruud and Man Utd at manutd.com
Funny how it doesn't stop him agreeing to it or taking it, though! Not just him, of course, but numerous others, too. Why not say, "Sorry, that's too much - I'll take £500 a week" ?
Not that I'd be any different - if someone wants to pay you a sill amount of money, then most people will take it. It just strikes me as a little hypocritical to call it "obscene" when you're happily taking it every week. At least be honest and say, "Yeah, I know it's silly money, but hey - if they're paying it, I'll take it!"
**SNAP**
Presumably photos or video of them playing would be 'evidence', but how likely is that?
ermmmmm ..........*runs away*
Looks like losing is getting to be a regular thing for him judging by Liverpools current run!
