Page 2 of ‘The Sun’ (bought to see what they had to say on Matthew Kelly, as opposed to the news on the events...)

(Headline)FOUND ‘EM

(Subheading)Iraq war closer after chemical warfare shells are unearthed.

Next to this is a picture of Saddam on the left, with the following text beneath it; “Saddam... terror weapon hoard”

On the right a picture of warheads “Deadly... UN uncovered warheads like these yesterday”

There’s a bunch of text after this, but by now surely most Sun readers will have caught a glimpse of the topless bird on page 3, Lashane, 18, slimming champ.

Anyway, I looked at the text. This first paragraph was highlighted.

“WAR against Saddam Hussein looked certain last night after UN inspectors uncovered evidence that the lying tyrant DOES have weapons of mass destruction”

(Smaller text follows, surely readers lost interest)

Eleven 122mm artillery shells with empty chemical warheads were found during a check on Iraqi bunkers built in 1990.

(Skip a couple of paragraphs concerning the 12th anniversary of the last Gulf War)

“That it was so far unclear exactly how significant the find was.”

At the bottom of the page there’s a comment by the Sun’s political editor starting:

“SADDAM has been caught red-handed”

Moving on to page 8, and the Sun Says column

“Time’s up for liar Saddam”

“IRAQ has been caught cheating the world and must face the consequences”

And so on.

Er... wasn’t the first bit of news what the ‘Sun says’ about the events?

What’s the circulation of this paper again?

If I get cable TV, can we see live action from the war? BombCamTV.

Anyone know the real news behind this...?

Well, as I see it;

*Iraq did not declare these 12 shells under their declaration, as 11 have contained traces of various agents this constitutes a breach in the resolution under which the declaration Iraq gave to the UN was submitted.

*11 shells have traces of being used for agents, and they had been moved to this ammo depot bunker, after 1991, although the shells manufacture date is something I have not heard yet. If they were manufactured post Gulf War then it's pretty bad, pre Gulf War is not quite so bad as it shows they retained the shells, but haven't produced them subsequent to the 1991 resolution. The very fact they have been kept, and not destroyed, is still pretty damning in itself.

* 1 shell is undergoing tests by the UN team, this is far more interesting as they had immediately established the other 11 had traces, so what is so special about this one ?

* The media expected this discovery to be the trigger for war, and seems concerned it hasn't. I suggest the answer to this is simple. What is the one thing America and the UK would dearly wish for, apart from Saddam surrendering ? UN backing. They take this discovery, add it to the evidence they have, an that which will come in the following weeks - Tony Blair hinted at this earlier in the week - then on the 27th, when Blix addresses the UN, they roll it all out, "material breach", Iraq:surrender or be disarmed by us.

That's my take on the situation anyway.

Incidentally, whilst were on the subject, Saddam's speech this morning wsn't exactly suggesting the proactive assistance Blix has asked for, was it ? I quote one hilarious bit, "let the Mongols commit suicide on the walls of Baghdad". Saddam does know what a B2 is, doesn't he ? The mind wonders....... Of course, this was a national broadcast as well so the content could be skewed for national consumption and not international.

Time will tell, but this discovery is one hole ( was originally going to put c h i n k in here, but SR says it is foul and abusive ??) in the armour of Iraq's "we've got nothing we shouldn't have" protests. Questions is, if it comes down to war - still not certain - will he go quietly, or take the whole nation with him ?

I hope for the first, but suspect we will see the second if war begins.

I heard on Radio One this morning that empty chemical weapon warheads have been found many times before, and haven't been deamed significant. Then they had some guy saying that it still wasn't proof that Iraq had any illegal weapons

How true that is I don't know.

and forgotten to include in that big old report as well oopsey.

Have to agree though the media will never give a clear view of anything. One side will be anti-american and say this proves nothing, the other side will say this proves everything about saddam now we must attack. Go figure eh?

unfortunately you'll just about never get the real news on anything in Iraq. EVERYthing will be twisted by the media. I like to think I've got a fair view though. I watch arabic as well as english media. :-D

the truth so far (according to the more civilised media) is that 11 empty chemical warheads were found last night and they're the latest excuse for Bush to get oil. Except the IRaqis said that they've been locked up and forgotten since 1990.

Go Figure.
