I was wondering what everyone thought the future of music and music sales is going to be. The copy write protectors are trying harder and harder to stop people from copying and sharing music.

For example I heard of a CD recently that will nto play on a PC system. But striagh away I thought of serveral ways around this - or instanance - plugging the audio out on your sterio in the audio in socket on your sound card. Doing that shouldn't result in any loss of quality.

In short the only way to stop the sharing of music is not to distribute it, which defeats the object really.

So do you think the future will be free music for all?

No. Because that way we will have no bands or artists touring. They won't make any money (in fact it will cost them money to record songs) and they won't be able to afford to give up day jobs. Therefore they won't be able to concentrate on the music as much, and won't reach their full potential as a band. And unless they work for a very kind boss at their day job, they won't be able to get the time off to tour. And even if they could, they'd have to pay for the transport themselves.

Sales (and profits) may well go down in the music industry due to MP3s, and the fact that our generation will be as used to downloading music from the net as we are buying it from a store. But music will never be sold for free, at least if you want the real deal CD (or DVD, or whatever medium we will use)

And even if music does become something generally bought and sold over the internet through MP3s, there will still be a market for something physical like CDs, which include pictures on the disc, artwork, lyrics, liner notes...
