Townsend's claims of researching child porno - hence his credit card being used to subscribe to a site - has been dismissed as "yeah right" from those eager to leap on the peado-bandwagon.
But before we all chase him through the streets and hang him based on simply being arrested, have a look at this:

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/doc_o_day/petetownshend1.html

This is not defending Townsend, merely suggesting instead of appointing yourself as the "He did it because...er...he did!", have a read and decide for yourself whether his defence/reason/excuse has any validity.
And if the police should decide to prosecute based on evidence instead of rampant internet gossip, then some people (Daily Mail included) are going to look pretty reactionary and short-sighted.

How on Earth they managed to get those celebrities to say such absurd things...

"A paedo has more in common, genetically, with a frog than any of us, and thats a fact. There's no scientific evidence, but it's fact"

How stupid can you get?

Isn't that being a touch generous?

Bloke at work was saying today that if he had accidentally gotten child porn on his computer (as you do?) he would smash the hard drive to bits, and go out and buy a new one.

By which obviously I meant that I'd expect Phil Collins to comment on the terrible subject of child-abuse.
I wasn't suggesting that he was also named in the 7,000 but has yet to be made public.
Because that would be libellous.

He is an entertainer of middling ability and a big shiny head, but is in no way connected to child pornography.
He is a generous person willing to donate his time to anti-child abuse programmes like Brass Eye

Remember, he's "talking nonce-sense"

I don't think he's guilty.

From what I've seen of it on the news, he's been really open, and a guilty man wouldn't do that as he's know he'd get in the crap.

Also, that report seems to be a pretty open account of stuff. Written, as you say Goaty, practically a year ago. So I think he's innocent.

Having read the article by Townsend from JANUARY 2002, I personally believe that his claims of research are genuine.

Before anyone starts saying "Oh he's a fiddler", read his report where he talks about how he was presented with an image and on advice from his solicitor (his 1st reaction was to save it and call the police), he was advised to not contact or save the image but to record the details for his research - precisely because of the witch-hunt mindset that pervades such a hot topic.

Do you remember the screams of anger here when Brasseye was aired? Go back and search the topics here.
Everyone was too busy screaming "Filth!" and "Pervert!" to be able to distance their emotions from the topic and try to be impartial.
That's not saying you have to believe Pete Townsend is innocent. I'm simply asking that you take a moment before instantly joining in the screams for him to be burned until any evidence has been provided he is not being truthful.

Ultimately, if he is guilty of using child pornography for sexual gratification then I'd be at the front of the queue to hang him.
Just have the strength to not give in to media hysteria and to be able to think for yourself before condemning.

I've read the whole thing.

Perhaps someone should email that link in to certain national newspapers and see if it changes their mind about going on a witch hunt...

Having read the article, I must admit that I do to some extent agree with the things written in it. I know someone who has trouble with being e-mailed from some dubious web-sites, The way she came about being e-miled with these adresses is through no fault of her own, but due to a mix up on the part of her ISP, confusing her e-mail address with someone elses, and ensuring that recieves the other persons e-mail. Being deeply Christian she finds the e-mails that she recieves very disturbing, and even in some case containing pictures. She has had e-mails from sites promising pictures of woman having sex with animals, and of pictures of teenage girls. (Probably not actually underage). She would like to go to the police about this, but she firmly belives that the police would believe that her husband or children are acessing these sites.

Whilst I agree with much of what the article says, I also believe that we should not be niave. Paedophilia is very rife in this area in particular, and many people would tell you that it extends further than you would imagine, extend to many professional people. Every week there is some new local scandle involving paedophilia in the local newspapers. It makes me feel sad.
