Batman, Spiderman, The Hulk and a host of other super-heroes share one thing in common. They used to be normal people.

Would you like to be the next every day person to become a superhero? Then why not apply to be on ITV's brand new TV show, Superhero Idol.

Contestants will be auditioning across the country over coming months, and must attend in a homemade outfit, telling of any super powers they would like to have.

The panel of experts will then choose a number of these to go through to the final stages. The experts will be former UK, European and World's Strongest Man and champion budgerigar exhibitor Geoff Capes, TV mathematician and scientist Johnny Ball, and former Doctor Who, Tom Baker.

Once 50 of the hopefuls have been chosen they will be invited back for further selection decisions to take place. A professional will make up their costumes for them, and they will have to take part in obstacle courses to prove fitness. Each potential super hero will also be subject to intense character assassination, to ensure that they will use their powers for good, and not evil. This will leave just ten competitors, who will compete in a weekly show for audience votes, until just one is left.

The weekly show will be a live event, and feature different themes each week. For instance, one week could be hand-to-hand combat with faceless henchmen. The panel of experts will rate their different fighting techniques and stances, before opening up the phones for a vote on who should go. Other week’s activities include;

Dilemma’s, choosing whether to save a bus full of children or finish the villain off

Gadget workshops; contestants musty create their own gadgets, and demonstrate how they will use them for good.

Wall scaling, contestants must climb to the top of a building, using anything they like.

Once the final super hero idol is chosen he will be taken to a radiation chamber and turned into the super hero that he has invented.

TV cameras will then follow our superhero around, to see how he does at fighting crime, until people lose interest.

If the show is a success ITV plan to follow it up with Super Hero Idol: The Rivals, in which they will not only create a super hero, but also a super villain. These two will then be set loose upon a city. The villain will get involved with organised crime, and set about a plan to take over the world, and the super hero must stop him.

If you're interested you'd better start working on your costume now! Audition dates to be confirmed.

Brilliant idea, I'd send it off to ITV...if they don't take up the idea (they'd be mad not to), then Channel 5 surely will.

Would their be a male and female version? Superman and Superwoman would surely win!

Round of applause Mr Dragon, best TV idea of the year...so far

Not quite sure they could getaround the legal problems with nuking contestants in an attempt to make them super heroes though. Then agin, if they sign a contract saying it's okay...

I know its not on the same level, but no-one seemed to care when I (accidently) exposed my hand to gamma radiation. (was a small sample)
Pity there wasn't a spider around at the time, never did get any super powers from that :(

Ha ha, great stuff, I liked that :)

If I was a superhero who could fly and be invisible, that would be the best.

I like The Rivals idea. Give them Milton Keynes to trash.
