Genious idea! In theory you could claim your own island and declare it your own country. To this extent you would have your own laws, coinage and even flag and national anthem.

However, to my dismay all the worlds landmass has been claimed by one state or other and thus any islands will come at a huge cost, so unless your a millionaire you can't really have your own island.

Anywho, I had a look over the internet and found this at a site about private islands-
In the early 70s a Las Vegas millionaire changed the layout of a coral reef near the kingdom of Tonga. Thus is was technically an island. You know what happened next...he declared it the Republic of Minerva. Cool. Unfortunatly the only nation that officially recognised the republic was nearby Tonga who promptly invaded with about a hundred convicts and a band to play the national anthem. And thus the Republic was annihilated.

Hmmm...maybe not such a good idea. Despite this I don't see why you couldn't claim an asteroid or something of that matter and have it as a nation state. You could even have your own seat in the UN.

Or maybe not.

Ah well...guess I will never be an Emperor after all.

I'm going to expand on my 10 acres of Moon and move there soon.
I shall call it "Moony", the currency shall be "Grottals" and each coin will have the face of Magnum P.I on both sides.

There is an independant and officially recognised "island country" (an oil rig) of the coast of Britain called Sealand. They are also free from any British law so they can host internet sites with "dodgy material", shoot each other and do anything their own law allows, international law aside.

I would love them to enter the World cup qualifiers and force a team to play on a pitch atop the rig.
