RICKY IS TV POWERHOUSE

Ricky Gervais has been named the most powerful figure in television comedy after creating hit sitcom The Office.

His bittersweet satire set in a Slough paper merchant has proved a surprise ratings winner.

The Office has also been sold to TV stations in more than 60 countries.

"Ricky Gervais practically owned TV comedy in 2002," said Radio Times magazine, which compiled the top 50.

The listings magazine said the chart was based on ratings, critical acclaim, financial success and industry insiders' views.

Gervais, who co-wrote the comedy with Stephen Merchant, stars as David Brent in the show.

Brent is the overbearing office boss who spouts garbled management catchphrases.

The Office won two awards at last year's BAFTAs and Gervais was named best comedy actor at the British Comedy Awards.

In second place was Steve Coogan, the Mancunian comedian who created failing chat show host Alan Partridge.

Channel 4's camp comic Graham Norton was in third place.
